In tHe report of the twenty-second E exhibition of the Mechanics Institution, the directors say; “The display from this county contained the. finest and most general exhibition of ores and minerals ever shown at any fair in the State. In this county official action was taken by the Board of Supervisors, and an appropriation was made to help the display both in Sacramento and in Saa Francisco. After thie close of the State fair the exhibit was supplemented by au unusually fine collection of fruits, grains and vegetables. Tho excelleat . quality of the apples and pears shown was certainly a surprise to those from other parts of the State, and demonstrated that Nevada county’s future wealth will proceed as much from the cultivation of her soil as from her mining. industries. Very fine samples of wine ~ were also shown, and, although they arrived too late for competition under the rules, yet their merit was recog; nized. The mineral portion of the exhibit was under the charge of Messrs. John Werry and John Pattison, and the fruits, wines and agricultural portion under the charge of Mr. J. R. Nickerson. ‘The committee for the county, to whom great credit must be given for the completeness of the display, consisted of Messrs. E. M. Preston, C. EK. Mulloy, Cal, Clark, Chas. H. Itis barely possible that in the early days, and in some remote quarter of the State, some debased fellow—as debased and wicked anywhere might do—has wronged a Chinaman out of his goods, or actually taken his purse at the muzzle of a pistol. We have heard of such things the classic chambers where Professor Appleton Morgan presides over the deliverations of the New York Shakespearean Club. But the distinguished author and critic would feel justly indignant should ‘any allege that it is the custom of peopie living in that respectable qnarter of Manhattandom to rob their fellows upon the highway, or extort money by force of arms from a certain class of residents of that city. The truth is, Professor Morgan’s charge is a clean-cut fulashood no matter who ‘fathers’ it, The miners of California regard the rights of property in their neighb. rs, be they white or yellow, as sacréedly as they do their ewn. They have notengaged in the ‘“‘eustom’’ of wringing pocket-money from Uhinamen. If an attempt to rob a Chinaman is made in the mountain mining section or in the valleys in California, the people are as quick to search out the offender and mete out panishment for the crime as the people of New York could be, aud -as ‘indignant that human rights are infringed as the anthor of the “ Bankgide Shakspeare” could possibly be. There isa great deal of libel afloat about California of which that just cited is but a type. The impression has been made by the Bret Harie school of novelists and the lesser ' army of florid and sensational writers of cheap literature that the” typical Californian of the mountains «is. a walking arsenal, a rough, unlettered and vulgar fellow, @ whiskey-drinking loafer, a renegade, a white-handed and-smoothed-faced gambler, or a desperate wretch, unrestrained — by . law, social influences, or any regard for humun rights. -Even to this day, people otherwise intelligent come upon visits to California fully impressed with the ides that they are to encounter the rudeness, dangers und lawlessness of a wild frontier and an unconquered territory. The evidence is palpable’ that Professor Morgan has fallen victim to this amusingly-foolish belief, and with guileless simplicity. has swallowed the libel bodily—that Qalifornia miners replenish their purses by throttling and robbing Chinese. But this cannot excuse him for the carelessness with which he_ promulgates an amusingly-silly libel, the very face of which should have put him upon inquiry ¢oncerning its Preaching at the Methodist Church this morning hy the pastor. evening Prof. G. The Enterprise thus tells of howa Virginia City lady met with asimilar loss: ‘Yesterday alady residing on North B street at an eurly hour hung out on her porch a large bird cage containing four pes canaries to bathe in the first warm rays that genial old Sol casts athwartthe horizon. About an hour later her husband upon leaying home noticed one of the birds dead, with its head cut clean off. Without stopping to reason closely as to how it occurred, but only thinking the bird got its head caught in the bars and pulled it off, he went on to his daily avocation. About an hour later his wife and~children-were—attracted to the porch by the noise of a bird, and on going there were horrified to see a butgher bird, or sbrike, going red-eyed for a canary. The bird did not let go its prey until scare: away, and then it was found that he had slain three of the four canaries the cage contained.” By the exercise ofa little labor and ingenuity such happenings can be guarded against.
