F. Chronicle, Jan. 1; 1889. . Nevada county claims special atten-' tion a& one of the few counties of Californiain which the three principal industries of the State—mining, agriculture and horticulture—are extensively carried on side by side. The county is accessible by rail, the Central Paci. fe Railroad running along ita southern boundary a considerable distance, and crossing its extreme eastern-end, while ‘the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad intersecta its central portion, extending north from Colfax to Nevada City and passing through Grass: Valley in its route. Geographically the county lies a, trifle north of the centrai. line of the State; and--exthe west to and beyond the stmmit of the Sierra Nevada. os In the.western portion the altitude averages some 1300 feet above the sea level, and the surface consists of gently sloping ‘hills and ridges with here and there large sized tracts: of comparatively level land. In the central section is the upper part of the horticultural belt, and here also are most of the great quartz and gravel mines. which have since pioneer days been yielding such vast quantities of gold. The eastern extremity is very mountainous in character, the principal industries thereof being lumbering, iceticultural belt of the county, which includes the townships of Nevada, Grass Valley, Rough and Ready and Bridgeport. great variety of productions is in8 within these limits. Fraits and vegetables maturing early, or requir ing a long ‘and warm season, thrive particularly well on lands facing to the south where the rays of the cun have slowly maturing fruits flourish on the cooler and more moist Ilinds with a northern exposure. ‘The valley lands between the ridges and hills have in most cases but little brush upon them, and though well furnished with water from springs and streams are not as well calculated for fruit growing as for the production of hay and pasturage. Among the most profitable fruits to be raised here is the pear, which is followed closely by the apple, both attaining in Nevada county the greatest perfection in size, flavor and keeping qualities. Grape growing’ is rapidly becoming an important industry here, this being the natural home of the already in two competitive exhibitions where the principal wine-producing sections were represented, earned the first prize, and other varieties of wine shown have stood high in the list of successful competition. The olive thrives here, attaining perfection in size.and quality. In the extreme lower portions of the county the orange is profitably grown, the fruit maturing unusually early and a full crop being generally obtained. 5 No county in the State is more abundantly watered. Mining and irrigation ditches, fed from natural-and artificial lakes in the higher altitudes, thread est, and the supply never fails.~ The climate has an invigorating freshness and salubrity that is not to be found in lower lands. There are no fogs, no blizzards, no malaria. Large numbers of people come annually from the seacoast and valleys to spend the summers here, and thus rebuild their shattered constitution. Adjacent to Nevada City and Grass Valley are located such. well-known and productive quartz mines as: the Providence, Nevada City, Wyouwing, Pittsburg, Neverswéat, Idaho, Empire, princip1 claims are equipped with the most modern machinery for mining and milling.
