The Daily Transcript. * pa arn mon] LOgAL ITEMS. vhé Railroad Survey. W.J. Organ, who has been with R. L. Harris, Civil Engineer, surveying theroute for a railroad between this dity and Marysville, returned on Thursday night. He informs us that Mr. Harris will be here ina few. days, for the purpose of finding a route leading into the town~of Grass Valley. The new line will be ran from the point already surveyed to Marsh’s reservoir, near Weir’s ranch. He says there is no difficulty in bringing the road into that town by going down by Worthington’s ranch, then around the Coe mioe, intersecting Main street at any point from Mill street up, and joining ov tha route already. surveyed at the North Star Reservoir. He also informs us that the cost of the survey of the. road will be one-third for Yuba county ‘and two-thirds for Nevada county, and. there is plenty of money in the fund to “jneet the expenses. The entire dis. . tance from Nevada city to Marysville, hy this survey, is 51 miles and 800 feet.. Important to Miners and Farmers. Through the exertions of Surveyor Bradley an instruction has been procured from the Commissioner of the General Land Office, reducing the legal subdivision of land: from forty acres to \en acres in -mineral-regions. “This: permits farmers as well as miners to make applications for ten acre lots, and igof the utmost importance to both parties, This was the very thing that was wanted to break the dead lock “that tras so long prevented the settle= ment of land claims in this county, and its good effects will seon be seen in the multiplication. of small farms frem-TitaBe Guided by wh There is an old proverb which says, “Experience is the safest guide.” To this guide the sick and ailing naturaily turn when casting about for the means of relief. From present appearances there is a great lack of candidates, and in reality we do not know a single one for any-of the above positions. There are, doubtless, many who will enter the field, but they seem to keep it very quiet. Don’t be basi» ful, gents, come out and show your hand, Narrow Escape. We noticed in yesterday’s TRAN-~ SCRIPT that John Shurtleff was bitten by a dog, and have learned since that he had a very narrow escape from death. Had the dog bitten him an in@h farther up, one of the main arte~ ries would have been reached, and he would, undoubtedly, have bled to death before assistance could be procured, As itis the poor fellow is ses verely but not dangerously hurt, Paid. J. B. Murphy, who died in this county some months since, held a policy in the New York Mutual Life Insurance Company for $10,000. The policy;with additions, amounted at the time of his death to $10,500. S. B. Davenport, agent of the Company, went to San Franciseo and collected for the execu: tors of the estate’ the full amount of the policy, which will go to Murphy’s heirs, City Assessor. At the meeting of the Board of Trustees, held Thursday evening, ap ordinance was presented fixing the Compensation of the City Assessor at $150 for his services in assessing the city property—the amount heretofore paid being $2560. “After some discusSion, the matter was laid over until the next regular meetiiig of the Board.
