NEVADA CITY, CAL.
Sluices and Cabin. Robbed. «
Petty robberies are becoming 80°
prevalent, as to be more the “rule
than the exception”’ on the outskirts
of the city. On the night of the 2Ist,
the ground sluices of James Cregan
were robbed, but no clue fonnd by
which to torm a suspicion. Ou the
7th the-house was—broken’ open,
and all the clothing and provisions
taken. The thief was tracked; and
the articles found ‘‘cached’’ in the
prnsh. Supposing that the depredator would return in the night, Cregan & ‘Brown watched the spoil.
About 8 o'clock a man of large size
came. On being called on_to surrender he held up his hands, but'the
moment the guns were lowered he.
broke into the brush. Two-—barrels
of a shot gun and one rifle were dis:
vbarged at him, nevertheless he .eswaped. Cregan and Brown supposed . .
him'to have_been struck by shot, at
least, and intimate that -if any one
’ should be found laboring undér difficulty of that kind, they would be
glad to be informed. The next noctarnal visitor will not be called on to
“stand.” =
Committed Sdicide. =~
A cow belonging to Mr. Torpie, of
Roughand Ready, became tired of
this life, and, to rid herself of its
cares and perplexities, deliberately
ended her existence one day last
week, Mr. Torpie turned her out in
the morning with the rest of his.
berd, and did “not notice anything
peculiar in her actions, and little ex~ pected that the next time he should
“tee her she would be locked in the
embrace of death; but such was’ the
fact. Thedeceased wore a bell which
was hung to her neck by a strong
leather strap. In browsing she evidently tried to réach higher than her
length would allow, and the conséequence was she caught the -strap. upon @ projecting limb, and, we
_8uppose, pondering on the mem=.
ory of the short grass enjoyed during
the past Winter and the general trib.
_Ulation she had undergone, and mus“ing on the green pastures and elysian
fields over the river, she deliberately
hung herself to that limb and perdshed, Mr. Torpie found her’ stone
dead on his search for her the following day. :
Dangerous Practice.
Marshal Getchell informs us, that
_ the boys have taken ap snother dan-.
gereus game. They amuse themselves by throwing rocks with a sling.
One of the missiles, Mr. Getchell
Gave us. It is about the size of a
hen’s egg. It was thrown, and, ac__.Gidentally of course, went through a
window of Jacob Naffziger’s house,
striking a cradle, in which a child
_ Was sleeping. It had sufficient force
te make a deep impression in the
_ Wood, and had it hit the child on the
head, it would doubtless have killed
it. Such play is dangerows and
will not be tolerated. The Marshal
will arrest the first boy found witha
sling. There are other ways, boys,
-to amuse yourselves in which there
isr o danger. Play at something
¢lse and avoid trouble. —

Past six weeks been in Oakland in
attendance upon his father, returned

Thousands fall a prey to disease not because the maladies that affect them aré necessarily fatal, but because they lack the re.
quisite amount of activie vitality to make
® -alliant resistance to the enemy. It is a
wise precaution to keep the body always in . a state of defence—always prepared to
‘*fend off” the germs ef epidemic and other
disorders, and to baffle the evil influence
of damp miagma and sudden thermometrical changes. There is no difficulty in de.
ing this. It is # fact-as wellaut henticated
as that two and two make four that Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is specially adapted
to this purpose, and for the simple reaso_
that its invigorating and regulating prop.
erties are superior to those of any other
medicine in the world. During the twenty-five years that it hus beenin general use
ample oppertunit.es have been afforded’ to
compare its medicinal properties with those
ofother preparations claiming to be of a
similar class, and the result has been ita
adoption by the American people as the
standard tonic of the age, its introduction
into every civilizéd portion of the western
hemisphere, and-the aunual sale which
dwarfs into insignificance the demand for
all its would-be competitors ,
The record upon which its popularity
rests is a curiosity im medicinal literature,
for it includes an almost unlimited variety .
of human ailments and disabilities. In
fact, no other remedy possesses such @ vaTiety of hygenic virtues, and it is Owing to
these characteristics that it. owes its prestige as a household medicine.
It is no exageration to say that Hostetters
Stomach Bitters is the most faithful ally of
nature, in her struggles with weakness and.
disease, that medical botany and~ honest .
chemistry have yet give to the werld.
