TUESDAY, APRIL 10th, 1866," —‘THE MODERN “Moses.—The occupant of tthe White House, like-others who put their trust fi hit, finds bimeslf the victim of mis-] laced confidence. It seems we have been ‘fooled ail ‘round. “The peuple have beet fooled in Johnson and he has found himself ‘in tHe same fix in his appeal tothe people ‘after his vetoes. He appealed from Congress to thepeople. The Connecticut elec: tion does not.suatain the.appeal. ‘The voice. ~—-of the people.everywhere, whether express: ‘od by themselves direetly or through their wepresentatives, is in favor of Congfess'ahd freedom, and. against Johnson, double-dealing and tyranny.. His veto ofa measure de‘signed to protect loyalty in the South has ‘been overruled, and a righteous law has ‘been ‘enacted in spite’ of him. ‘It now be«comes his duty to enforce that law. Will the do it? We have seen that the National Intelligencer’ hes known’ better in advance ‘what Johnson would do, than Congressmen “f his party ‘who'éupposed they were on ‘terms of .the closest intimacy with him.— ‘When that paper, of siispicious loyalty durang the war, sét forth pretexts for: not signdng the Freedmen’s Bureau Bill, it was acen ‘the President used the same pretexts in his veto. The same circumstances were obseryed in the case of the: Ciyil Rights Bill, Many other incidents show that when the Antelligenour “hazards & predidtion” as to}: ‘the future course of Johnson, it'is not mach of a hazard. It speaks by the card. In fact the President has been found reading tthe proof sheets of that journal prepuratory to the appearance of something in it touch‘ing his intentions. Well, the Intelligencer ‘has threatened that Johnson would not exe_ cute the Civil Rights Bill if it became a law over his veto. This moans that Johnson threatens. The Drunken Dictator at Washington fe not going to obey laws that he don’t like, Very. well; we shall vee what . . we shall see, There seems to be backbone in Congress. The pluck of sturdy old Ben. Wade is.fe:t among ‘the loyal represesta-. tives at Washington. Johnson is estimated . at his.full:velue.,He is only a man and a’ moderate apology for one at that. He has the stubboroness of a mule and may have to receive the kicks and/knocks of one to go ‘along where he ought-to go. It is possible and quité probable that he may attempt to setup for himself. Let him take any course hie foolish will determines, It isa matter of httlé consequence to the cause ef human liberty. He may retard progress a little; but the party devoted to human rights will never cense to agibute until the blessings of liberty are secured to the. whole family of mah. “We prefer to have Mr, Johuson do something which shall define his statua as a politician. “Naturally a demagogue it is to be expected’ that he will try to maintaia a position bétwixt and between loyalty and “treason, the Union party aed the rebels.— & Our: Moses is: still in the ge We. Let-us have no compromises—not one, Men ate nothing, and especially whea they are of the buser surt. Johnson, if so ber, is but ao ordinary man, and is entitled to only that respect which is accorded to wen'of his caliber and moral standing. ‘The position he occupies is. worthy -of respect. _ and the position alone eaves the double-dealing, modern Moses from contempt. : Tre number of wills engaged in the United States in the work of rolling iron for Failtonds, is thirty-nine, with the capacity of 32,000 tons, a __. She: and_her cubs .made ‘toward the Sink, closely followed by Brown and the Orderly. In attempting to cross a deep slough the old bear got mired down, and the Orderly expert with the lasso. she was asily captured, bound and brought to the eity. She weighs 1,300 pounds, and her cubs weigh some 1,100 pounds each. They are to be taken to San Francisco. Interesting Report.—The Internal Revenue Commission have submitted an-interesting report on the oil trade of the Uni: opinion that the consumption of refined petroleum ‘will increase rapidly in'the United States, particularly in the Southern States ; and that if the duty upon crude should be abolished, the revenue from refined, at 20 cents per gallon, may be expected to amount to six millions of dollars per anrum. The average daily production of petroleum in Penpsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky at the present time is estimated at 12,000 barrels. ee DIVORCES.—In the “provincial dialect” of the Mendocino Herwid, the ‘divorce mill is in fall blast” in Mendocino county. Four enses are, already on the calendar. of the next District Court; and, adde the paper alluded to, “we are told by one who has opportunities for knowing, that unlyss.compromises be made, this number may be increased ty twenty or mure.” Such a cunfession. is rather humiliating, when. it is considered. that Mendocino County is but sparsely populated, , ae in COMMENDABLE ENTER PRISE.—Thoe Placerville Reoorder says that a number of citizens of that place have organized for the purpose ‘of mantfacturing wine from the grapes: growing upon the surrounding hillsides, ‘and to facilitate the putting of it into market in the principal] Atlantic cities. The profits upon money thus invested, it thinks, fthe business is properly conducted, will be-immmense, and its benefite to tha i) Y t county can Beatvely ‘be over-estima ted. Freak OF Fortune. —Speaking in ref. ‘erence to the veto of the Railroad bill, the Call says men who a few days ago were millionaires, are, since the veto, obliged to borrow four bits-of their friends to uy a breakfast.
