2a J Local Brevities, The. Daily Transcript § K. Casper iirrived in this city “ NEVADA CITY, CAL. — Sunday, April 11; 1875. ings pale «Public Opinion. , The Balletin has devoted the most ,ofits editorial columns, for the past week; to the-nbuse~ of Senator Sar-. gent? The Senator was. expected to arrive in San Francisco on , Wedoesday night. The people generally, who appreciated. his services ‘to the Btate, ‘proposed to give lim a fitting “yeception on his arrival. The Bul. lectin, as soon as_it became aware of the intention of thy people, surren“dered its-editorial columns. to flagrant abuse of Mr. Sargent, so as to . Friday night from a visit. of ‘several weeks to the. East. We have. seen tura to this State after a short absence, but Casper was” the ‘most pleased of all. He thinks there i8 no plice like California, and no town like Nevada City. After freezirig -for he can thaw out. His many friends gave him a cordial weleome home, The belfry on the Episcopal chureh wis 80 utranged that it prevented the fine bell recently put in it from short-distance. Yesterday workmen . were engaged in making the neces-. sary alterations. Mr. Hyman, one of the firm of several people who were glad to re-. two months, he is glad to get. where_. Its. defeat the proposed.-reception;: but the people: eurried out the pro~—"~—gramme-handsoinely, and gave him such a reception as was never before given a represeptative-in that city.” The demonstration was not confined * to petty offieials who are dependent upen Sargent for political favors, but was participated in. by the Demgcracy as well as. Republicans, thereby showing that his course as a Senator is appreciated by the people, ivrespective of party. His “speech was short and<-to the. point, and is favorably commented on by mearly every paper in the State, ex-eept the Bulletin and one or two of ‘its followers, That paper says it was quite conciliatory in tone, and — gays the reason is, the ‘‘Senator is shrewd enough to take account of the fact, that—in—about.three years theré will be another Senatorial election,” and from that assertion hopes to: frighten somebody. We are. of the opinion that its insane tirade of abuse, its malignity, wholesale’ calwinny and slander will have the effoct, if képt up during the three coming years, to make Sargent more. popular with the people than he is to-day. It has said nothing new, it as made no original charges, but Bas simply given a re-hash of what has appeured in -the Sacramento Union scores of tines, and its scurvility sounds: so. familiar that we surmise it was.penned by the sanie hand: -dulged in by the Union, and did not The Bulletin may pursue the game course, and it may obtain the same verdict from the people, There is a controlling public opinion regarding journalism, as well as Senators. John Conness_may have been supercillious, but those who have had business to transact in’ Washington, —— have never found Mr, Sargent supercillious, and the peuple very generally recoguize him aya prompt, en‘ergetic, conscientious: and able rep. resentativas: : [tp is the people who form publie opinion, aud that opinson-to-day, is very favorable to the man upon whom the Bulletin is making its vindictive and malignant attacks, The Result of Its Teaching. The Bulletin ought to feel proud’ of its strenuous efforts to render abortive the attempt to give Senator teaching was heeded by. only a few; but that few made their mark, and this was how it was done: While . the column was possing ap Broad~You were born,” _ ‘way street, and'had reached the corwer vf New Montgomery avenie, wome miscreanta inthe crowd threw weveral stones gt the carriage in which were seated the Senator, May‘or Otis and Collector John Sedgwick. The Mayor was struck on the side vf.his head, his ear cut, and the flesh torn. He was stunned for a moment, but quickly recovered. Collector Sedgwick was also bit, but not seriously hurt. The crowd, perceiying the dastardly act, instantly turnpetrators, but: were unsuccessful, Had they been caught, it would have gone very hard with them. Ah A, me Ir is reluted of a certain minister, who was noted for his long sermons With many divisions, that one day, when he was advancing among his teens; -he-reached at leiigth a kind of resting place in his discourse, when, pausing to take breath, he asked the question, “And what shall I say amore?” A voice from the congregu~‘tion earnestly responded, ““*Suy *4uren'!’’ ap > INprewant aunt< "You common rude chiki, you, .Why, I could speak French perfectly long before Nice thing in nieces— “Phat might bave been uuntie, but { am very certain you have never done so since,” Rome has given Garibaldi a splendid villa, but the old gentleman will wot wear a white shart, ° ; Jae Fe: ” 4 The-same-matignity—wast+ ———--ed-and endeavored te secure the -per. ‘Hyman brothers, clothing merehants in this city, is here on a‘visit to iis brothers, __ The “surveyors have reached the hill atthe Town Talk, and are uttempting to run # new line from there into town, whereby a mile in ‘distance will be saved, with but—tittle-or perhaps less cost of -construction. ~ If the-line is decided upon, Hughes’ yanch, Cishin &Cg., are slaughtering a large nuinber of cattle and sheep, and the establishment looks like’ busi% “That part of. town on the other ‘side of the creek, is looking up, and . will, id time, be the most business part of the place, The depot, the carriage shop of Seaman’s, “the Half-Mile House, which will be and is now the headquarters of teamsters, and other establishments which will be erected there, will make it a business centre, There was a procession passed through town yesterday. As we are not posted in the game, we refer him to the editor of the Union. He can glide away with such quest.ons with the utmost ease. Sarcent’s ‘Recerrion,—Wednesday night Hon. Aaron A, Sargent, . United States Senator for California, arrived in San Francisco. He was received by the Mayor of the city,by a delegation from the Board of Supervisors, by the military and by citizens generally. Among those who turned out te do honor to the Senator were very many who do not agree with him’ in politics, and who do not.approve his political course. The ovation, for. the receptien amounted to an_ ovation, was made because Senator Sargent has ably, faithfully and most untieingly represented the interésts of his State in the Senate and before the Departments at Washington. He has not neglected to attend to the requests -of any person,-high-or-low, rich or poot, made to him, and the a:tentidn has always been prompt. Such energy and ability as he has shown deserves the reward of a general approval.—Grass Valley Union. — ee
