Chloroform and Robbery,
Sunday night, between 11 and 12
o’elock, J. W. Bobinson, who i{esides on Water street, was awakened
out of his sleep under the impression
that he heard robbers at his window,
trying to: cut through a pane of
glass. He got up and went cout on
the porch, but beiny’ in a confused
state of mind from some cause, hardly kuew what he was about. The
fresh air somewhat revived him, and
he looked around the outside of the
premises, but seeing no one,,.came in
and went to bed again, taking the
precaution to remove his purse,
which was in his pants’ pocket, and
place it in the middle of the bed, under the sheet, between himself and
wife. When he awoke’ yesterday
morning, between 6 and it o'clock, he
felt the same heavy oppressive senthe night, On looking for his purse,
which contained thirty-seven dol:
lars, it-could not be found.’ He then
awoke his wife who was in a soufd
sleep, and related to her the ciroumstances. Diligent search was made
on and about the bed, but the purse
could not be found, and Mrs. Robinson complained of the same drowsy
sensation, The conclusion arrived at
is, that the robber was in the house
and had administered chloroform
to both of them, and when Robinson
awoke, he secreted himself, saw
where the purse of money had’ been
got to sleep again. the robber gave
him another dose, took the purse
and went on his way rejoicing.
Another Bonauzn.
The Gold Flat Eureka mine, ‘situ
ated a short distance south of the old
Sneath & Clay mine, and about one
mile from this city, is proving itself
a regular bonanza, and. is exceeding
the most sanguine expectations of
the stockholders, Work was commenced on the mine about 10 months
ago, and after the ledge had been
struck, a number of crushings were
taken out, the one previous to the
last yielding $63 ‘a ton. The last
crushing of forty-four tons, which has
just been completed at Crosby’s mill,
gave two bars of gold, one weighing
320 ounces and the other 23 ounces,
making a total of 342 ounces, worth
$164 per ounce, or $5,643, being over
$128 per'tom. The ine!inv is down
120 feet, from the bottom of which
the tunnel or pay chute extends 200
feet; The mine is owned by John
Trenberth & Co.,. mostly Nevada
City men, while a few hundred
shares are held in Grass Valley, The
ledge is believed to be an extension
or continuation of the famous Sneath

who have worked in it, to be a good
mine, It has been idlé for some
time; the last time any work was
done on the the property, being ander the supervision of M. Dodsworth.
Weare also informed that the Scotia will again commence work, and
that Mr, Stoddart is expected in
Grass Valley ina few days, to make
arrangements to that effect. The
New York Hillis looking somewhat
better than it did a few weeks since,
a new ledge having been struck in
the mine, which shows a very good
quality of ore. It 1s estimated that
the clean up this month will go
something over $6,000.

are not informed whether any of
the above gentlemen are candidates
for re-election or not, but one thing
is certain, however, that Nevada
City has never, from first dorganization been represented by three
more faithful, hard-working and -honest Trustees as K, Casper, J. C.
Locklin and Felix Gillet have proved themselves-to-be, During their
whole administration they have honestly and faithfully endeavored to do
their whole duty without fear or favor, and are deserving of the wellwishes of every citizen whohas the
interests of the city at heart,

The Water Pressure.
As soon as the we ther is settled
the Chief Engineer will ascertain by
practical testswhether the.pressure of
water is greater or tess than it . was
before the improvements were made
at the Company’s works, The TRANSCRIPT’S press can not be rut one-half
as fastas it did before the change
was made;and we believe there must
be some obstruction in the main pipe,
for certainly the changes made
should give us more instead of less
power. Previous to the improvements
the Chief Engineer made several tests
and the peoplé are anxious to see
the second test’ made—and so are
we. Ifitshall be found that the
pressure is asgreat asever, the TRANSCRIPT’s preases will have to be run
by steam uuless other attachments
can be made to increase the power,
* -ilfom. Ed. fF. Barton,
We notice by the dispatches ,that
our old and-highly esteemed friend,
Ned Burton, is being urged by Congressman Pacheco for Surerintendent of the San Francisco Mint. We
hope he will be appointed, for we
know a better or more worthy man
can hot be found for the position,
He is everthing that goes to make
up a first-class man. We have no
faith ,however, that he will get it, for
the reason that few men of his caliber ever receive a good appointment.
Ned. Burton, ‘many years ago, was a
Senator from this county, and he acquitted himself with honor to himself
and his constituents,

Stop the Squirting.
A prominent physician says that
the Chinese habit of squirting -water
on ¢lothes in ironing is very dangerous should be stopped. Ulcerated
tonsilsare common among Chinese
laundrymen, hence the water squirted is often impregnated with germs
of diseases, which are ironed into the
clothes and thus scattered universally into all clasees of society. Either
the squirting or the patronage given
to China laundries should be stopped, ‘
