"On Saturday last Hon. iat: aT: Oates 3 retarned’'to this city, and was heartily weleomed by his constituency. His enemies
have recently been circulating a report that
the cine presented to him was spurious;
that he had it made himself, and other
things equally derogatory ; but these reports
lose their force upon inquiry. The cane is
it—many sought to do so on account of the
report—-and this slander, like all others’
iaunchéd.at Sam. gives him more extended
favor, and reacts upon those who sought to
injure hin. The truth is, Oates was the
-acknowledged-orator of the Assembly, and}
was frequently urged to speak on great
questions, and his reputation has even extended beyond the State. His name and
fame are beyond the reach of envy or
scandal, and by this time his enemies ought
to know if:

The Digger Indians at their settlement on
Wood’s Ravine, are getting ready for. a
grand pow-wow this Spring, and they are
constructing an amphitheatre forty feet in
hight and about one hundred’ and twenty
feet in circumferencefor the festivities.
This tribe has for several years migrated on
their Spring holiday, but it appears their
camp will receive the visitors this time, and
they seem ‘determined to do 80 in a style
worthy. the: aboriginal inhabitants. Their
performanées on the occasion will undoubtedly be interssting to outside barbarians,
