She Huily Granseript,
WEDNESDAY, APRIL'12, 1871.
With an area almost equal to the
State of Rhode Island, extending from
the foot hills to the summit of the Sis
erras; anda climate“as healthfal asany:
in the world, a soil capable of yielding
all the fruits of the temperate zone,
Nevada county is capable of sustaining
an immense population, even without
the development of mineral wealth.—
The same amount of labor, capital and
paeray expended’ upon this county as
ave made the Eastern and Central
States what they are, would convert
this county into a garden spot, and dot
its hills-with thriving towns.
‘Bit in addition to all these advantages, the county is one of the richest in
mineral resources in the world, These,
though much more advanced-in development than in many other sections,
have as yet received but little attention, when their extent and value are
concerned. It has only been a few
~years since mining has come to be took:
ed upon a8 a permanent occnpation, or
since claims were opened requiring
years of work, and yielding a regular
and substantial profit for the labor expended and the capital invested, We
think it is safe to say that in the last
_four years more new and _ rich gravel
mines have been opened and worked
ata profit in this county than were
worked regularly before that period,and
now extensive ranges are being opened
in different localities. These companies
have only tapped the great subterra‘nean channels which run in different directions throughout the county,
here and there. Entire ridges, where .
for miles no openings upon them
have been made,"ifre apparently as rich
so. far as indications. go as any yet
opened; have remained entirely unprospected.Of late years, especially
during the last two seasons, much attention bas been given to the opening
of these rich gravel ranges,-_Foreign
capitalists have been seekiny for mines
of this character, and the future prospects are most flattering.
In quartz mining the prospect is no
less encouraging, It requires capital
to develop these quartz mines, and they
extend from the foot hills to the Sums
mit, Some rich mines have been opened at Grass Valley and Nevada, and!
also at Eureka and Meadow Lake.—
Outside of these places little systematic mining for quartz has been done)
of Placer county since 1850, and who though ledges are numerous and good
prospects have been obtained. The
prospectors are usually without capitaland therefore work at a disadvans
tage, and are compelled frequently to
abandon leads which are afterwards .
opened and proved to be rich. This
hasbeen the history of numbers of
quartz leads in Nevada county. There
are still large districts, rich in quartz,
unprospected, and_where good paying
mines will some day be opened.
Nevada county possesses excellent
advantages in the way of water power
for running machinery, while the -system of canals built for mining give
them opportunities for irrigation if des
sired. Besides this the vast extent ot
of country containing fine timber is
also a matter of great jmpertance. The
mills in the vicinity of Truckee alone
are supplying lumber as: far east as
Salt Lake and as far south as San Jose.
The timber ranges in this locality are
nearer the markets than any one on
the coast and we only need communication in order to bring this branch of
industry into great importance.
The great demand now is local en~
ergy in the advancement of the interests of the county, and a hearty co-operation of the people of the county in
all enterprises tending to develop the
county.
Tue hen fever is unmistakably
beginning to rage again in the country
quite severely, At an auction sale of
faney poultry, at New York, a trio of
light: mas brought $25; another
trio sol giant id eggs from choice
fowls brought from. $2 to $4 per dozen,
And these prices are called “low.”

this world.
Grass Valley items.
The following items are from the
Grass Valley Union of yesterday :
WiLL Grapes Keep?—This question has been often asked, and bas been
answered both affirmatively and negatively by those who have experimented
in that.way. Yesterday Mr. Charles
Barker, of this place exhibited a sample
of grapes which he had kept through
the Winter in all their freshness of
taste and plumpness of size bya very
simple, process Mr.° Barker packed
up a barrel of Catawba grapes in
sawdust last Fall, and yesterday the
barrel of grapes was opened, and the
fruit_wae-splendid,.
WATER Prpzs.—The Committee of
the Town Trustees, consisting of

towns in the State within a few
months. PA
THe Cockrit.£{The: Spring fights
between game cocks commenced yesterday. The pit was opened at the
corner of Main and Auburn streets.
The attendance was good and the
interest in chicken disputes was great.
Boston Ravine chickens did not win

result. A clubis to be forimed here

DuRING the last session of Congress
a law was passed which causes an important change in the mode of making
public the patents which are issued for
inventions. Hitherto a brief account
ofall patents had been given in connection with the annual Patent-office
report. Instead of this, the Commissioner of Patents is now authorized to
have printed a certain number of copies
of the specifications and drawings of
each patent “hereafter issued. One
copy is to be placed.in the Capitol of
each State and Territory for free inspection, one for the same purpose in
the clerk’s office of each District-Court
ot the United States, and. one in the.
Library of Cengress. These copies
must not be taken from the depositories
named for any other purpose than to be
used as evidence in the courts. The
Commissioner is also directed to have
printed for salesuch additional capie
of specifications and drawing as may
He is, moreover, authorized to furnish
a complete set of themito any public
library which will pay for binding
them into volumes to correspond. with
those in the Patent-office, and for their
transportation, it beiag understood
that they will. be made conveniently
Naccessible to the public. By thie arrangement all persons throughout the
cduntry who are desirous o learning
the details of inventions which ‘have
been made can do so with great fecility.

A Nove. ProposiTion.—An Eastern Life Insurance Company has commenced proceedings, says the CAronicle, against a wealthy real estate owner
in Pennsylvania, named Ward, to recover the sum of $10,000. The cause
‘we haye—stated, . action is that one Shroder effected a. _
life insurance in the company amounting to. $10,000; that without. prevocation or justification Ward killed
Shroder, and the company was obliged
to pay the legal representative of the
deceased the amount of the policy. If
Ward had not caused the death of
Shroder, the company would not have
been obliged to pay the policy, and it
is claimed that Ward is liable for this,
one of the resulting ¢onsequences of
his act. Should such a-principle of
liability be established as law there will
be no end to litigation — especially
where persons, having their lives
insured, are killed in railroad accidents,
or by the fault, negligence or carelessness of any individual or individuals,
ANOTHER RaILRoaD Suit. — The
Alia says: A suit was commenced
April 8th in the Fourth District Court
by Albert Dunlap, to recover $50,000
damages from the Southern Pacific
Railroad Company, for injuries received
on the 18th day of last December.
The plaintiff, who is a carpenter,
alleges that he purchased a ticket
from the defendant on that day, to
convey. him from San Francisco to
Laurel station. He states that the
train arrived at that place after dark,
and stopped on an embankment four
feet high, and he was told io jump off.
He did so and fell to the ground,
breaking his right shoulder -blade,
ising -and-wounding his_right leg
and arm, and otherwise sustaining
internal injuries. He states that he
will be injured for life by the ettects of
the injuries.
SmouLpD. Have BEEN PUNISHED.—_
The Central Californian tells a strange
April fool story. Two young men in
Hollister pretended to quarrel, they
were separated by friends, but after—
ward met in the street, and drawing
pistols, began firing at each other ; one
of them fell, and on opening his vest
his shirt appeared bloody. A great
crowd assembled around, among them
the distracted mother and other relations.of the murdered man; the pretended murderer escaped, and many
went in pursuit of him. In the mean
time adoctor came, and ‘after struggling through the crowd began to
examine the dead man, but could find
ne.wound, no bullet hole. At last the
young Scape-grace jumped up, declared
he was udhurt; and it soon became
known that the-ruse was a sell on all
fools’ day. an

Exhaustion.
Invalids, broken down in health and spirits
by Chronic Dyspepsia, or suffering from the
terrible exhaustion which follows the attacks
‘who have been raised as by a miracle from a
similar state of prostratien by Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters, is a gure guarantee that by
thé game means'you too may be strengthend
and restored. But to these who stand-in peril of epidemics, to all who, by:reason of exposure, privations and uncongenial climate or
unhealthy purspits, may. at any moment be
stricken down, this paragraph is most particularly and emphatically addressed. You, who
are thus situated, are proffered an absolute
safeguard against the danger that menaces
you. Tone andregulate the system with this
harmless medicinal siimulant-and-alterative,
and you are forearmed against the maladies
whose seeds float.around you in the air un-seen,. Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters are not
only a standard tonic and alterative throughout the United States, but they are accredited
by the certificates ef the most distinguished
citizens of the Union, to tLe people ofall oth.
-er lands. In Canada, Australia and the West,
Indies, they are gradually taking the place of
all other stomachics, whether native or foreign, and as surely as truth is progressive and
demonstration: overthrows doubt, they will
eventually supersede every other invigorant
and restorative now employed in medicinal
practice.
