Serious Accident.
* Jos. Eustis, a resident of French Corril, met with a very serious accident
on Saturday morning of lust week, by
being ran over by a four horse wagon.
The accident happened near Fitzsim~<
mons’ ranch, while hauling wood. «In
driving down-a-steep place ia the road:
the brake-became loose, and Eustis lost
control of the team. The jolting of
the wagon threw him off. the seat, and
in endeavoring to recover the reins he
slipped and fell under the wagon, and
two of the wheels passed over his back
from shoulder to shoulder) Several
persons who were near by hurried to
Eustis’ assistance, and carried him to
a house a short distance from where he
was hurt. Dr. Harris, of San Juan,
was sent for, who reports that though
the injuries sustained by Eustis are
very serious, yet the chances are’ he
will recover. ;
The City Election.
The Charter election takes place on
the lst day of May. As yet few candidates have been announced for city
offices as will be seen from our col~
umns. The election does not promise
to be ks lively as usual on such occtasions and little interest seems to be
manifestedby~ our cttizens: ~~ It “ia
highly important that good men .and
taxpayers should be selected as Trustees, a8 upon the character ef the
Board depends the management of
city finances and the taxation of the
people. It would be well for citizens
to consider the qualifications of every
candidate who presents himself for
their votes at the Charter Election.
A Nigger in the Fence.’
An interesting little episode occurred
at the St Patrick’s Ball, in this city on
Monday night. A leading Democrat
objected to dancing ina set because
there wasa nigger in it. The coms
mittee went on asearch and it is res
ported that they found twenty Democrats whose hair curled cleser and
whose complexions were darker than
the individual who created the sensation. Toward morning the secret
leaked out. The party who first raised
objection was debarred from dancing
on the ist of January, and he played
for even on St. Patrick’s. Besides the
reputed darkey was fairer skinned and
got more partners than some of the
Democrats who were jealous of him.
The aforesaid objectionable individual
danced until midnight before it was
discovered he wasn’t white, and he got
his three dollars back.

-. -one-we have ever knowin this county,
e regret to learn that Banner Bros.,
One of the oldest and most popular
firms that ever engaged in business
here, have determined to close’ out
their clothing establishment in this
city, to engage in business extensively
elsewhere, after a residence here of
ten years) This celebrated firm has_
risen-with greater rapidity than any
We well remember when Banner Bros.
Started in this place with a stock of
clothing that could be easily packed in
good sized box, and from that small
lot they commenced increasing until
now they can justly be termed the
leading ready made clothiers on the
Pacitic Coast. Their stock—here has
and at Virginia City, their establishment is larger than all the balance
combined, to say nothing of their
branch houses in San Francisco and
New York, at the latter place where
most of their goods are. manufactured.
There are many good reasons why
they have been so successful. They
have always made it their aim to. accommodate everybody, courteous in
every respect, selling goods cheaper
than they could be bought in this or
‘auy other State, and they have not
been afraid to use printers’ ink in the
most libera) manner, They enjoy, today,a reputation for honesty. enters
prise-andliberality that many older
firms might envy,’ and they have ges
their business in all its minute details,
and which has attracted customers
from every part of this and adjoining
counties. They have just received a
very largestock of goods for the Spring
trade, which ‘was ordered several
months since, and it, with the balance
of their immense stock, will be sold at
first cost,as they are determined to
close .out. during thepresent season.
Before these gentlemen leave us, and
everybody will regret their departure,
for they will surely be tissed, they
have concluded to give the people of
Nevada county and country merchants
a grand benetit by selling their stock
at less than first cost, with the idea,
evidently, that they intend everybody
shall be well dressed fora small amount
of money, which said articles will be a
gentle reminder of the celebrated firm
of Banner Bros.
