That Quarrel. Agein. at:
The Stockton Independent, in iatroduciig an article from the TRANSCRIPT
entitled “The — at Washington,”
says’:
Except for its inferential condemnation of the removal of Secretary Gorham;the following, from the Nevada
Transcript of April 7th, will meet a
general and ape indorsement.
The inferénee of the Independent is
certainly. far-fetched and entirely unwarranted by the language used. The
~=only reference made to the quarrel be-:
tween Cole’ and Gorham, is ‘the follow.
ing: .
The quarrels mong the Califortiians
at Washington ure discreditable to,
themselves. and promoters.of discord in
the “party: in> California ~fatest .
is-between-Colethe contest appears so bitter that the
latter has come ‘up before the ‘Sehato}
rial caucus. . We do not allude to this
" ‘quarrel for the ‘pur pose Of discussing its .
merits, nor do we propose to indorse or
gondeinn any of the participants. “We
only desire to protest against the intro.
duction of these personal matters into
California politics, or the attempt of
any man, whether friend or foe,’ to
make his quarrel.a party matter.
Where is the condemnation. of the
removal of Secretary Gorham to be inferred from, this extract? .On the contrary
it explicitly disclaims any intent to dis
cuss the merits of this fight and protests against either of the participants
attempting to bring it or. any, other
personal matter into the politics of the
_ State. We have never been the champion of Mr Gorham, nor do we propose
to act as “bottle-holder” for any individual, while-he is engaged ina contest to get even on somebody who has
offended him, and if we can prevent it
the Republican party shall not be made
a party to these contemptible squab:
bles.“ We stand ready to. condemn any. man, in whatever position, who attempts to.press himself upon the party
and to sacrifice its welfare for his own
personal aggrandizement or vindica.

INDEPENDENT.—The Alia says : The}
Examiner, not having succeeded in all
that it proposed with regard to the bill
for the protection (?) of litigants, feels
itself constrained to. become moderately
independent, We accordingly ° find
that in opposition to large sections of
its own party, it declares that the Fifteenth Amendment 1s an amendment,
and that it would be worse than folly
to offer opposition to it. That this is
independence, at least of the moderate
sort, is established by the fact tliat it
assailed other journals when they
questioned the soundness of the doctrine laid dowa by the Governor that
the Fifteenth Amendment could not be
adopted because it was not ap amendment atall. For this exhibition of unbiased judgment we are indebted, we
presume, to the raid: made by the Reporter upon the original raiders, If
that organ of Democracy had not so
arranged: matters that in addition to.
its own preper and specific share on
the protection of litigants, it ig to have
the exclusive publication of all sammonses toabsent defendants, would we
have been ever treated to such a remarkable effervescence of fearless comment on the fart of the Zraminer.
New Circus Cominc.—The advance
party of the Great Oriental Circus Ag:
. gregation,as the papers style it, has
arrived in San Francisco from the East.
This company ‘is said to embrace some
of the best gymnasts, acrobats, riders,
vaulters, and equestriennes in the profession’; and as none of them have ever
before performed on. the’Pacific Coast,
the lovers of the, sawdust will have ab
opportunity of wittessing’ new and
novel arenic feats. The principal performers are Chas. Fish, the celebrated
bareback rider; the Lowry Sisters,
eqestriennes ; scenic and hurdle riders;
Charles Parker, the unique humorist,
and Shetee and Whitney, acrobats, be
sides a small army of lesser lights. The
company will appear in this city ina
few weeks.

THE Democratic organ, the ‘Ohio

respecting the Fifteenth Amendment:
