The Water Test.
The Chief Engineer yesterday
made a second test of the pressure ot
_. the water works, The first one was}
previous to any change in the pipes
at the reservoir, The one yesterday,
after the change had been made.
The following are the figures of the
various streams at different points as
furnished us by Mr. Englebright:

By the above it will be seen that
all the single streams show a decrease exceptone. Two, of the four
strean.s, show an increase, and twoa
decrease. The three streams at one
time show am increase, Owing to
the high wind prevailing while the
test was being made yesterday it
was not considered a fair one and
we presume another one will be
made when the weather is more
favorable. It is generally believed,
however, that under the most favorable circumstances, the _ resent
changes made by the water company
has diminished the power instead of
increasing it.
Unele Peeves Cabin.
The Jay Rial Troupe will appear
this evening, at the Theatre, in the
great play of Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
For the past two evenings they have
been performing at Grass Valley. In
spe.king of the company the Union
says “It isa drama that appears never to fail in interest with the public,
but in which is given some new fertures by this company, which has given it an extension of popularity. As
performed by. this tronpe there are
introduced a chorus of colored jubilee singers, several trained: bloodhounds, and a donkey that is not at
all as stupid as it looks. The character of “Eva” by Blank Newcombe
was charmingly sustained by the little Miss, and Miss Sallie Partington’s
“Topsy” was very amusing. The
characters generally were well sussecured at “Vinton’s Drug Store. Admission 50 and 75 cents.

The triai of C, Beckman, for vio-.
lating the Sunday Law, was commenced in Justice Robinson's court
yesterday forenoon. District’ Attortwy Gaylord and J. M. Walling appearing for the prosecution, and G.
D, Blakey and C. W. Cross for the
defense.
Forty-one jarors were examined as
to their competency to act as jurors, and out of that number only
eleven could be found. At 5 o'clock
in the afternoon the attorneys agreed
to try the case with that number. The following is the list of
jurors: The: Rupley, L. Reagan,
R, J. Hughes, J. G: Witten, M. Dunler, Wm, Brown, J. Leonard, Wm. .
‘. Enderline, A, Underwood, T. Mahar,
this morning at 10 o’clock. —_-—
Re-appointed.
We learn from reliable authonty
that James O'Brien, Esq., has been
re-appointed Superintendant of the
ExcelsiorMining Company's prop:
erty at Smartaville. We are glad
“Jim” is back in his old quarters,
for if there is a place that he can fill
better than any other mining man it
is the one he now occupies, He
took charge of the property on Monday last and every laboring man in
that vicimty rejoiceth thereat. We
never had any faith that O’Brien was
ent out for a granger, and if the latter class had not acted so contemiptibly mean towards the miners, we
shonld not have been so reluctant in
announcing the fact that O’Brien had
leased the Bonanza Ranch and Sang
to farming.
—— soo -Body to be Shipped.
Tidings: The body of Hung
Chung, the Chinaman who was
caved on and killed last Saturday
morning at Canada Hill, was
brought to Grass Valley Tuesday,
and taken charge of by Tin Loy,
who placed the defunct John in
Johnson’s undertaking rooms, ,where
his coffin was hermetically sealed,
preparatory to being shipped to
friends in China, The dead Chinaman stood very high among his
countrymen, and was faithful and
trusty to his employers.

Wants to Lead Of.
It is so rarely that Frank Pixley
is inany manner practical, that it
affords us great pleasure to find something occasionally in his Argonaut
that is really worth considering and
copying. Take the following, for
instance:We must. educate the
people of the East to view this question as we view it. Boston is the
East. The Argonaut would be
practical. Let us send to Boston
some examples of our Chinese population; let us give them a taste of
the superior quality of these specimens of brotherhood. The Argonaut will take pleasure in heading a
subscription list with five hundred
dollars to send some car-loads of our
Asiatic brothers and sisters for adoptipn into Beacon Hill society. Let
us send one special car filled with
gamblers, aceompanied by a onestringed fiddle, to teach the game of
tan; one car with prostitutes, to open
up their vocation in Milk street or
Maiden Lane; one car as a “smoker”
for opium, and. when Boston is reached let it be thrown open for the use
of its boys and girls; one car we
would fill with lepers, and with
those diseased with syphilis, smallpox and other maladies that are the
resultants of four thousand years of
crime, poverty, hunger, and neglect.
Let acolony be formed, a SundaySchool be opened, and a kindergarten for object teaching. Let
every pious old maiden of Yankeeland tackle an Asiatic sinner, and
wrestle with him to his soul’s salvation. Let every New England
preacher pitch into ahd try his luck
at snatchingan Asiatic brand ~from
the everlasting burning. Let the
gospel sharps go -for the heathen
Chinee, and rescue them from -the
wrath to come.

STRANGE PROCEEDINGS.
The. Supervisor's supervisorial
order instructed Mr. Cadwalader ‘to
bring suit against all companies tailing on the divide between the American, and also against companies tailing inthe Cosumnes. We. “believe
this is done to pull wool over. the
eyes of the tax-payers of Sacramento. Nosuch suits will be brought
as residents and officials in Sacramento are interested in claims in this . Co™
country embraced. in the instruction to Cadwalader. Had the ring
been acting in good faith they would
long since have brought suit against
the large company operating within
Bar. This company is overwhelmcould be incontrovertib y established
by witnesses without danger of refutation, The only question would be the
RIGHT to souse his property. Why did
these gentlemen select the mine most
distant from Sacramento and which
was not doing her any injury—for it
must be conceded that there was no
proof direvtly counecting the Gold
Run Company with sending any tailing below a poiut three miles distaut from the mine, We should like
to-have the Bee, the ring organ, explain why a company within eighteen miles of the State Capital,
which moves more material in one
year than the Gold-Run in five, is
exempted and the most distant company selected. We have‘ our own
idea as to the reason.
-———— oe --—-Miss Lizzie Smith; a school-marm
of El Dorado, who took the biggist
and worst boy in the school by the
coat collar end jerked him over
three rows of seats and waltzed him
around the room with a hickory
switch until he howled bloody murder, was acquitted of the charge of
excessive punishment. The Judge
is an old Kentuckian, and is of. the
opinion that there isa good deal of
virtue in ahickory stick well applied, Lizzie Smith is of German
parentage, and although the boy is
14 years-old and very stout, she
proposes to be boss of that school
or die in the attempt.
