Ee se A Va The Daily Transcript NEVADA CITY: CAL. —— —— SL SSS ae Wiandliay, pe 14, 1875, ‘Coanty ‘Alas fs'¢ounty has an indebtedness of oak $23,000. That amount will probably be liquidated in. the course of two years. Iti is at present, more prosperous than any other -mining county in the State. It cun be “made still more. prosperous by assisting in Opening up Dew avenues) ef wealth. New rounds are needed to make many parts of it prosperous, . _and bring the resources of those parts gonvenient to market. The . “Ridge, for instance, extending from French Corral to ‘Eureka, is the most thriving part of .the county, and . piysa large part of its taxes. That section is éntitled to good roads to the Railroad.’ There should be a yoad constructed from Grass Valley to seme point en the lower part-of the Ridge, aud one should also be ‘built from this eity toa point nearer to tle upper portion of it. Thé eounty can well afford. to lend assistance to such enterprises. They —-will-tend—te—develop—the—sectiotrof + gan Francisco eountry through which ‘they pass, aswell a9‘the places. at. which they terminate. It is. not expected that the full amount ‘required should be granted, Private subscription casa be obtained for a great portion. ‘of it. . If the construction of public highways will benefit the localities through which they pass, the coun“ty will certainly be benefited in the way of increase of taxable property and increase of population, It is “the duty of government to afford highways and it certainly cannot be out of the way tonasist, when citizens are willing to engage in build-} jug them, If the travel-o other.sections can be drawn to our}: county by the’ outlay of a little capitul, every consideration would, seem to demand that expenditure. If it is desired to have, the county increase ‘tn prosperity, in wealth, and popula—tion,it-would seem the proper way de of], Brevities. on ladies’ class of Mr. “Milling: neing school,. which was to on Thursday « afternoon, aré to meet at the Skating Wednesday) afternoon, Rink this instend,: °“Who wants to spell and distinh themselves, There is-an—ops peeves for all the ambitious. The above is presumed to refer to the weather, if such a term is applicable to what-we have, here in spells, and, on the average. a8 uncertain as stocks, “fan. tastic as a wornan’s mood, ind fierce, as frenzy’s fevered blood.’ But it’s nice to-day;. the sin shines warm overhéad ; the-pave is dry under foot; the old timer takes a shade more} lime in his toddy, while the pilgrinx from the eastern shore-drinks inthe sunlight, and builds “castles in re= pair’’—out of the silver bricks he inbig bonanza. ‘STOCKS Have gone up, stocks have. gone dewn; arid speculators ,have been one moment’ away up, and in the ‘next on. the “ragged edge of despair.”° We cold nrisympathising . stock market was better yesterlay. -Ophir was.quoted at 98, Mexican 27, Gould & Curry, 1814, Best & Belcher, 53, and Crown Point, 41, The stock market is a good deal like a weather vane-at this -time—of—year=no reliance ‘to be . placed . lon it. ‘Bruce B. We hope Bruce will be able to get it on terms to suit him, 89 — the se ese may be ed tm. He has been confined to his room about ten days. ~ The pipe he was holding got away from him, and . foopen it up fur sach development. The ainount expended by the county. “and citizens would soon be returned “in tho-way-of-increased business and "property values. We see no good reason—why—both roads_mentioned should not be coustructed and why “the coun y should not assist each ry ertunate Country. ‘ Our State is fortunate in the. pos‘Session of not only an uneqittulled élimate, but it is measurably: free from. all .thepests that infest the’ States East-of the Rocky Meuntains, In many of the States there, the “grasshoppers devour everything bofore them. The potato bug destroys their potato crop, the weevil, the. chintz bug and-rust, the wheat crop, borers, caterpillars and other insects injure their fruit. crop. In fact, almost. every production of the farmers there, has something liuble _ tach year to destroy it, Here, there are few pests, there are no rains in _.aarvest.timie.to injure the. gathered grain, and only occasionally frosts: come to hurt the fruit crop, Truly, welive in a blessed country, No wonder emigrants are. flocking to our shores by the thousand. We fervently hope that-they will not bring any grasshopper eggs, or the seeds vf,uny other of their numerous pests with them. An Iinportant Omicial. ‘The Omaha Herald gets this good ‘one.off on its mayor, Champion 8. Chase. “Several” ‘years ‘ago, before our Napoleonic mayor had condescended to devote bis tremendous intellect to public affairs, and was in the full tide of an overwhelming legal prac_ tice, he was called upon, one merning, by one of our prominent citizens, on & Matter of business. He! was found at his desk busily writing, but took the time to look up fora anoment und begged to bo excused tunt'l afternoon, as he had some important matters on hana, that re‘quired bis immediate and undivided _uttention, The-gentleman called in the afternoon and tound Chase stitl at his desk with bis pen going and the ink dying ata terrific rate. With: out looking up; he requested his vis~jter-te-be-seated and he would be at “Jeisure us soon as he Gould possibly aa through the weighty matters then before him. In the course of some fifteen minutes he stepped into an adjoining rooar for something, when tie gentleman in waiting, wit 4. natural curiosity to learn what momentous affair Was under ceusideration walked over to the desk. He there saw, a sheét of fuolscup, written all over, on both sides from top to bottom, with the magic name Champion 6. ‘Chase, Champion 8. Chase, Champion 5, Chase, and pothing more. his face. He is all right wow, and congratulates hizaself that the result was not any “worse. Improvements. We notice many improvements going on in this city, among them the tearing. down of the building on the opposite corner of the new M. E. Church, owned.by Mrs. Hoel. Charley Kent is having many improvements made about his residence. The house has been newly repainted and presents & fine appearance, A. Lones has improved his place on West Broad ‘street, by painting liis houses and fences, Beautifying } his grounds and making other improvements, Lones’ place is one of the prettiest in the city. “There are not so-many improve ments going on now as there was last season at this time, but still our citizens are busy fixing up here and there,'getting things in good shape. by the time the railaond gets here. Crxcrnnatr Hinn. -We took a stroll over beyond Gold Hill one day this week, and found oa really live movement on one ef the oldest locations in Grass Valley District— the Cincinnati Hill claims, Several years ago these claims, comprising 2,600 feet on the lode, were largely worked through. innumerable shafts, down to where water interfered, and a goodly amount of gold taken out, No machinery was ever put upon it,, we believe, anda drain tunnel run the water from a depth of atout fifty feet. Valley men, having secured the title from the former owners, have. made an earnest start, under the Superintendence of Mr. John Bray, towards opening up these claims, and working them below the water level. When we were there a large double shaft, inclining . about 60 degrees, was dowu-fifteen or twenty feet, the and by the look of things they would. soon be nicely under way. They expect to reach thé ledge: at, the point above which it has been worked out in five or six .weeks, when affuirs thereaboats will “begin to get exceedingly interesting —Foot Hill Tidings.
