The ca&ket was draped and strewn with 9 . howers and fragrant pine, the em‘ blems of the Orders above. The Nob hung with black. At one o’clock the choir singin beautiful melody that singular affecting hymn, ‘‘Near. er My God to Thee,” and as the sweet strains swept through the hall the eyes of the gathered friends filled with tears and the breast ofall throbbed in sympathy. ‘The young ladies and gentlemen who sang the hymn threw a world of pathos and tener feelings into the words and music for‘they too were friends of him who is a. had passed:away. Atthe conclusign ofthe hymn Rev, T. H. McGrath delivered a short prayer, his voice choked with emotion and the tears streaming from his eyes. Rev. Dr. + Benton then read an appropriate hapter from the Bible and delivered he funeral discourse. He spoke of this man’s noble career, his fortunes and misfortunes while fighting the battle of life, and his own long aequaintance with the deveased. At last his emotion mastered him. and he broke down completely, apologizing for this display of his intense feeling by stating that for years the family of the dead had mingled with his own, and that as recollection went ce oO not restraim the feelinys that were welling in his heart. Rey, Mr. MeGrath then delivered a familiar tribute—one of those eulogies such as an admiring. friend pays to another when both are in the land of the tiving. Ife said that he would not bid his friend farewell, he would only say good-bye—he would meet Fred. The Bald Sudhatals Gold ead Silver Quariz Mining Company, whose claim is two awd a* half miles down Oregon Creek, below Forest City, have run a tunnel two hundred feet through ‘blasting slate rock,. nearly east, tapping the ledge which promlses weli. The interested parties are W. Q. Jillson, T. Dudley, W. H. Fowler and Wn. Hargrave, banker at Napa. tain Extension Company—at Forest City last month, one hundred feet. of tunnel was run in the brief period of twenty-one days, through cement or mountain lava. Holes are drilled in the-face of the tunnel, from three and a half to four feet.in depth, every blast throwing out aboyt two feet of rock. Ten pounds of giant . powder are used for each day and night shift of twenty-four bours. No timbers are required, and on completion, should the lava_fermation con+ tinue, this air-line tunnel will never need repairing, and be a permanent “open sesame” tothe ipexhaustibleings ‘that led theproprietor to endeavor to eject them, , They objected to going owt, and.one of them in a scuffle that ensued fastened his teeth on one of Shaw’s fmgers. -The latter tried to get loose, but being unable to do'so _otherwise—dragged his opponent over to the bar and getting a bull-dog pistol out placed it against the biter’s head and pulled the trigger. The charge in the weapon failed to explode after five at-) tempts to make it, and it was only when Mr. Shaw hit the miner over the head with it that the finger was released. It was during this latter proceeding that the pistol went off, the bullet penetrating theceiling. This is the most remarkable case of tenacity on record, not excepting any incident that has occurred in the history of General Grant, or Senator Kane’s position regarding the name of the man who tried to bribe him, >= A Demeralized Graveyard. Fa r It is @ wonder that the spirits of those people whose earthly -remains are repobing in the graveyard on Broad street donot get up a petition, written in letters. of fire, asking the living to renovate the premises. It isamild insinuation to say that the cemetery is a disgrace to the memyry of the departed‘and to headstones have many of them toppled to one side, the enclosures of some of the lots have gone to total decay, the mounds have in many instances sunk down several feet, while weeds and underbrush flourish choir sapg another hymn and Dr, Benton-2losed with a prayer, after . which the casket was borne to the sleighshearse, a draped vebicl@drawn The the street, and all-who followed the remains tothe grave rode in sleighs or walked two abreast through the driftad snow. Bald Mountain. The dimensions are six and one half feet: high by five and a half in width. Fifteen carloads of cement are run out every twenty-four hours, which, considering the preseut length of the tunnel, over seventeen hundred feet, and algo that only hand power is employed, is a very creditable amount of work for four men in the short shaft has a fall of sixty-four feet, thoroughly ventilating the tunnel. The supposition now is that possibly underneath the strata of lava there may bea rich gravel bed coursing through the South Fork to the:Bald Mountain Extension ground. In the history of gravel mining on } this~coast, or perhaps the development othe broad, rich and extenSive mineral belts in the most noted gold-bearing countries on the globe, it would be very ditticult to discover a gold mine that has in afew years yieldel such princely dividends on an insigniticant ‘investment as the now famous Bald Mountain of Forest City. Onan outlay of $25,000, cost cf sinking a shaft, ‘running a tunnel and the purchase of a water right, since the claim was first opened’ in 1871, an income of over $800,000 has been realized with aggregate receipts attully $1,500,000. Since the advent of water season, last December, the surn of $40,000 has been diviied among the stockholders. The December was the best monthly yield, amounting to.$23,290.
