_ hotice in to-day’ 's paper it will be seen
that a meeting. of the Union. ee
__ called for the:
sider the propriety of calling the next
primary election under the Crawford
County System. An invitation is extended to all members of the party who
~ feet-an fnterest in the matter andwe
would urge that all such attend.. We
are satisfied from. conversations with
members. of-the Committee that. they
desire to act fér the good of the party
and in-accordance with the wishes of .
the majority of the party. Members
who feel interested. should, therefore,
attend the meeting, and present such
reasons for or against theadoption of
the new method of; malsing nominations us they think ought to be considered. By deciding the question thus
early candidates and their friends will
have ample opportunity to make prepa.

New READING MATTER.—George R.
Crawford yesterday received a large
assortment of excellent reading matter
by the last steamer from the East. He
has the Atlanticand Putnam’s for April,
Harper’s and Frank Leslie’s pictorials,
the Bazar, Hearth & Home, and lots of
others. Those who want late reading
matter should be sure to call on Crawford,
Hoeicipg.— Cashin & Kent have
slaughtered over 3,000 hogs during the
season, and converted them into hams,
bacon and lard superjor to any to be
‘found in the State, We have tried
them and Know whereof we speak
The hams, bacon and lard from this esablishment have attained a State reputation and bring better — than
_ any others.
New Gun.—We ommurday examined
a gun invented by Gove, which shoots
without powder or other explosives.—
It isexceedingly simplein construction . .
and if it can be made to shoot as accyrate and with the force of a rifle, a revolution ‘will certainly take place in gunning. The:new gun may be seen at 4.
P. Davis’ shop.
EASTWARD Boounp.—Sinion Rosenthal, of the firm of J. & 8. Rosenthal,
left this morning for New York,to visit
his old friends and purchase a lot of
dry goods for the trade in this city. He
is one of the oldest merchants in the
county and knows exactly how to suit
the tastes of the people. While abroad
he will make arrangements by which
to secure from the East the shipment
of all the new styles of goods for this
market.

INTERRUPTION OF MINING.—We are
informed that the supply of water for
mining operations has been cut off in
the lower part of Bridgeport township,
in consequence of the. breaking of a
ditch or flame. The damage will, however, be soon repaired, and operations
resumed. ‘
In Town.—Charley Kent, who has
been traveling through the lower counties buying cattle, was in town yesterday for a few hours. Hg informs us
that beef ¢attle are very ‘scarce, but
that the market will.soon be supplied,
as the grass is good, and they will soon
be in condition for sale.
Frencep Ur.—We notice that the
old road leading by the Town Talk,
parallel with the Grass Valley road, has
been fenced up. ~ Is there any law
against the obstruction of public highware, in force ?

Doherty, yesterday declared his intention to become a citizen of the United
We learn that quite a number of

have been ‘réceived, doubtless to the .
great delight ot the pupils.
A Coacu.—We understand that Eng}
