NEVADA CITY, CAL.
‘LOCAL AFFAIRS. /
The Manzanita Claims. e,
The Manzanita hydraulic claims,
located on Burbonu Hill, just beyond
the city linrits, have been w orked under the supervision of W. A. Roberts
since November last, and he will
soon have them in «s good shape as
any mines of a similar character in
the State. The company is nowrunning 1,000 inches of water, and washing off a large amount of ground
through the old flume, while a bedrock tunnel i is being run tostrike the
gravel at the bank 47 feet below the
surface. This _tunnel—was —commenced:in 1867, and is ‘to be 2,600
feet in length, When Roberts & Co.
bought in they had 1,495 feet still to
run, D. B. Merry, County Surveyor, made the survey, and working by
this they.on Saturday last made the
connection betweeh shafts 4 and 5 at
the face of the bank, striking it as
‘trite as though the: entire work had
been above ground.. They have now
only 294 feet torun to complete: the
tunnel and this they are working out
from six-faces;-and-by-May-20th itis
expected that only 100 feet ‘will remain to be run,
ting lumber for the tcnnel upon. the
ground, and will suon be ready to
commence building flume in the tunnel. When this new tunnel is completed, the fall will be sufficient to
work the ground to the best advantage. The prospects of this elaim
are excellent and they will take out
lots of money.

Water Failing. 8
The impression now prevails that
the present season, which appeared
so excellent for hydraulic mining a
shorfer than the run of. last year, in
those localities where«they only have
water part of the year. Though
much snow fell there was no rain to
_ pack it, It was very light and melted rapidly, so that little now remains
todepend upon for a long supply.
_ Atsome points-in-the county the
supply is already failing.

Silk Cuiture. ©
We understand that an Italian who
is well acquainted with silk. culture,
“1g trying to muke arrangements with
all persons who have mulberry trees
in this locality, for the leaves-of—the
trees this season. If he can make
satisfactory arrangements he proposes to go into silk eulture extensively and give the industry a “Yair
test. The cocoons produced by Mr.
Muller and others in Nevada county,
are said to be the best in the State,
and have everywhere, when brought
in competition with others, carried
‘off the first prize. We hope that the
plan now talked of, by which food
enough to support a large cocoonery
can be procured, will be carried out,
and that the expediency and profit of
the business on a large scale will be
fully tested.
4“ Big Strike.
We heard a repert in town yesterterday that a man named Cashwash
had struck # pocket om Red Hill, near
this city, and taken out $2,000 in
gold; This was certainly a good
cash wash for him.
