Bi aoe aad THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. NEVADA CITY, CAL. =a Pett Mining Boom at Mooney Fiat. Great excitement is occasioned at Mooney Flat, in the lower part of this county, over the discovery and location of some placer mining ground, A company from San Francisco, Setes, of George Barstow, Peter Jas, R. Lee, M. W Fox, Es G. Stetson, Geo. H. ~ Forster, Octave G, du Py and Alton H. Clough located about 160 acres. Another, the Bonanza Mining Company, consisting of J. B. Faller, W. A. Winer, Jobs Clowth, B. Batler 120 acres further ‘north, and stitl endlbs. a tig she abore two locations, who claim the first two arenall and void, as Mooney Flat mining district has never taken any action to conform to thé’ government mining laws, The district laws say that 20 feet front, renning to the center of the hill is the lawful location:Fhe-first:two companies, thinking the laws had been changed, made their locations in confurmity to the U. 8. laws. The last locators get away with the pie, which is a good one, well baked and well seasoned, ala gold dust. There is much excitement over the locations by the old fortyniners thereabouts, who now say, ‘‘dog gone it, why didn’t I locate it 30 years ago. I always thought the ‘channel went through that way.” The liberal offers of the Excelsior Water Company to prospectors will induce others to make locations, when we may expect to hear of good old times again in that part of the county. ied Smartaville Looming Up. Pa A correspondent writing to the Transcript from Smartsvil'e says: ‘For the last three months our village has resembled the habitation of the dead, and fears were entertained that it would always remain so. About that time the management of our mines changed hands, and unfortunately for the village and surroundings it did not fall into hands that added any great energy to the working of the mines. Nine-tenths of our citizens had nearly given up the hope that we would ever recover our former activity and liveliness. But James is himself again, and all join in huzzas in the prospect that. he will’again bring our once prosperous village to its former self. The present ‘Inspector’ of the Excelsior company’s mining property, James O’Brien, Esq., has again been given the helm, and with his customary energy, has already made our countenances “‘round up,” when before they were as long as mourners at a funeral. James suddenly appeared among us as though he dropped from the heavens, making us all feel as happy as ‘‘Oscar’s” big sunflower.” A Nice Place. The west side of Sierra valley must be a charming: region. From Susanville to Beckwith’s, twenty-five miles, is a double row of thrifty. settlements, These form an uubroken line, each farm joining its neighbor closely, The yield of the soil is abundant and varied, rainfall certain, timber plentiful, aud the people are exceedingly social and neighborly. Irrigation is in some places desirable and natural reservoirs indent the mountain ranges ready tobe utilized, The neighborly character of the people may be judged by their treatment of William Sperry.. In February his house was burned ‘and: he lust all its contents, At once the people moved a good house upon his land, furnished it, stocked it with provisions, and by the aid of social entertainments raised $600 to set the man on his feet again. The Sierra ‘‘west side” séts the world an example. . reais tases ce Onz thousand Chicago quarrymen are on a strike, having become dissatisfied with a dollar anda half a day, a thoueand Chinamen ought to be-sent there immediately. Itr is not likely that. the .climate would ' ‘prove very good, A thousands bundles of bones would shortly return, ' nicely boxed up, on their way to China, But it would not createany remarkable commotion if a thousand Chinese were to be used in suchmanner here. It promises to be fully as large and: brilliant as the comet of 1880, and it will! be visable to the naked .eye in about five weeks.
