The horse disease has made its appearance in our city, and ‘is spreading rapidly.——
_ The cows around town are getting
troublesome to gardens. Early in
~the morning they open gates with
thei? ‘horns, and destroy the flowers,
shrubber¥,;~ trees, etc. Threats are
made to shoot them, if they continue
their depredations. “Owners of cows
had better look after them,
The Trustees of .Grass ‘Valley
should put up some large size bulletin boards on Mill street, reading
‘ thusly: “Teams passing. through
this street do so at their own risk.”
The notice is indispensible, as the
planks have rotted and broken in
about a thousand places. The street
is a disgrace to civilization.
Dr. Simpson, of Grass Valley, left
_ yesterday for a trip to the Eastern
States and Europe. The Grass Valley Club, of: which he isan honored member, gave him a grand banquet at the Exchange Hotel, on Tues’ day evening:*
“Old Block” and his wife went out
prospecting for a quartz ledge, on
Tuesday last, and struck an excellent
one on New York Hill. ~The rock
looks well and the ledge is of good
size.
"Within the past week, the Central~Pacific Railroad Company “have
raised their rates on freights from
~San Francisco to Colfax, to $10 per
ton. Thé' old’ rate was $8 20, being
an increase of $180 per ton. Considerable indignation is manifested
by our merchants at this unexpected

Civil Engineers Watson and Ed.
Robinson, who are foremost among
those who are engaged in the construction of narrow gauge railroads,
are engaged now in running a trial
line from Colfax to Grass Valley and
Nevada, —for-the—purpose--of-ascertaining the practicability of such'a
road between these towns. This reconnoisance will be completed: in a
few days, and these gentlemen may
be expected in this city, when we
hope to be able to make known the
result.of their examination.
