There is a waking up all along the northern ‘line. The Chicago Inter-Ocean in its issue just previous to the opening of the fair there says: ‘Will the won_ ders of golden, sunny California ‘ever cease? It would seem not, and were it not for the fact that we are daily brought in contact with the marvelous productions of the Pacific slope by means of rapid transportation, etc. we should in many instances be led to discredit what would otherwise sound as fabulous in character. Seeing is believing, however, and our citizens will be pleased tolearn that an opportunity is soon to be afforded them ‘whereby they can witness with their own eyes products: from Central and " Northern California, which to describe on paper would bafile the most flowery “and gifted imagination. We have no need for irrigation ; ‘the soil is such that it will retain moisture for several months without _ the need of artificial means, so that we ‘are never in dread of droughts, Another and decided advantage is our Oranges and lemons ripen from six to ‘eight weeks earlier than those of Southern California, a fact which “many Chicagoans will be surprised to learn, inasmuch as they have always heen led to believe that this portion of the State was adapted to fruit of a temperate clime. The‘forthcoming fair is promising of many novel and attractive features.
