“<THE FAIR AT CHICAGO.
‘The display lof fruits from Northern
‘California now being made in the city

and that is what’s the m But a
turn has occured in the >; ~-andit
has set in the right. direction.. There
is a waking up all along the northern

issue just previous to the opening of
the fair there says: ‘Will the won_ ders of golden, sunny California ‘ever
cease? It would seem not, and were
it not for the fact that we are daily
brought in contact with the marvelous
productions of the Pacific slope by
means of rapid transportation, etc.
we should in many instances be led to
discredit what would otherwise sound
as fabulous in character. Seeing is
believing, however, and our citizens
will be pleased tolearn that an opportunity is soon to be afforded them
‘whereby they can witness with their
own eyes products: from Central and
" Northern California, which to describe
on paper would bafile the most flowery

of Sacramento, Cal., who is here in

people of Chicago and the great North‘west with Central and Northern California ag a fruit-producing section. ‘We
“ have this one advantage,’ said Mr.
Gregory, ‘that nature does her own
work. We have no need for irrigation ;
‘the soil is such that it will retain
moisture for several months without

Oranges and lemons ripen from six to

Southern California, a fact which
“many Chicagoans will be surprised to
learn, inasmuch as they have always

the State was adapted to fruit of a temperate clime. The‘forthcoming fair is
promising of many novel and attractive
features. The tempting and luscious
fruits will be arranged in all possible

end that, too, on a most elaborate
plan.. There will-also be bearing orange and lemon trees on exhibition.’ ”
