Halleday will deliver a lecture at the Congregational Church: this eveniag. Subject, “Broked Columns, of Great Men and their Purposes.” This is the second of a series of lec~ tures to be delivered. by Mr, Halleday, and those who attend are garanteed a rich treat.» The leetures are free. We understand that Mr, Hulleday proposes delivering course of lectures on the tulfillment of prophecy, in which he takes issue with Elder Grant upon ‘his conclusions a8 based upon. prophecy. These lectures would be exceedingly interesting to those. who have listened to the discourses of Elder Grant, and: his theory that thé end of thé world is near at hand. He has a “dooflicker,” consisting of two rodsof whalebone with a metalic ball on the end, and the ball twists the inatrament where gold ‘indications “are strong. It is reported he visited the Eureka, but bis instrument, instead of pointing toward that ledge, indicated that there was a richer spot in the direction of Spring Hill. He went toward Spring Hill, ascertained the exrod to turn from the Eureka and made a location. We are informed that men with capital, who have confidence in Peck, ure backing him in his‘enter-. prise, and that work has already been conmenced atthe spot indicated .— Should the parties now engaged suc«eed in striking a rich lead there, some confidence may be placed in Peck and. his divining rod. The Mortgage Tax Suit, Our readers are aware that a spit} was brought by Nevada county against “Wm. M. Eddy, for the purpose of test. ing the constitutionality of the law passed by the last Legislature, exempting mortgages from taxation. The case was decided in the District Coart in order to bring the matter immediate, ly before the Sapreme Court, and it has been set for hearing by the Court on Thursday, May 11th, This cause is looked upon as one of such importance by the Court, that members of the bar, whether engaged or not, are invited to participate. Hon. Niles Searle appears with John I. Caldwell, District Attors ney, for the People, and Hon. A. C. Niles represents the other side. The argument. and decision of this case. will be looked. for with great interest by the people of the entire State. Roll of Honor.
