They forget,'or never seem to have known, that the stock-market has exhausted its sources. of supply, Let a circus come to town and it does a big business and makes money fora day or two, Let it stay a week and it goes to the Sheriff—or the Sheriff goes to the circus, which is the same thing. The stock market thrived, while it did thrive, on the savings and current income of the peuple. When the people’s money gave out and they were in debt past redemption, the market bad to live and last on itsown capital and its bad debts or eat its head off. It. has been forced to thie last resort, and the picking, has proven excéedingly clean. The people, while they could, kept up the percentage and furnished the expense money. The ‘stock game isplayed out jnstas faro and monte are played out. When the unprofessional betters are all “broke” the game is-no longer profit. able becatise it is confined-to the sharpers who are non-prodacers, By an inexorable law, capital is never at astandestill, If it does not increase, it diminishes. Now.the stock market does not live off the mines. A mighty small allowance of dividendmoney goes into the pot, The inflowing capital must come from outside sources,—trade;»miners’ wages and the mechani arte,—-profits and eurnings must be available or the game resolves itself into sharp practices between the professivnals. By and by, when the people are fattened up again, flush times in the stock market will be possible—with the stock market or some other business which promises the illusion of quick made-fortunes. Surface digzings ouly make good times while they lust, When the placers are stripped there is nothing but small pockets, overlooked chispas and tailing:-piles left;and nobody but'‘a Chinaman will attemptto work them with an expectation of profit. Thos..L. Hughes vs James K, Consideration of case _rePlaintiff introduce evidence until hearing, rested. The defendant moved that the jury visit the ‘‘cuts’’ and “‘fills’’in dispute, and the plaintiff consenting, it is so ordered. The jury thereupon retired to. visit the premises in charge of the Sheriff, the Court having designated E. W. Cross on the part of pluintiff, and John F. Kidder on the pari of the defendant, to accompany them. Court adjourned until to-morrow morning at 10 o’clock. sumed from Saturday. Heavy Shipments. The North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Company have been making some heavy shipments of gold during the past month and they are now taking out the precious metal in large quantities. We could not get the figures, as we never can, which seems to be an exception to the rule If the same shipments were made from Virginia City, the amount would be heralded in every paper at that place and San Francisco. We never could understand why Gompdnies do not give us items, bat it seems they will not. Our object in getting such news is to let the outside world know how we are getting along in this part of the State, and if mining men will not assist us, we can never expect to be able to do it, het een tite eee) Smuggling. § Quite a breeze has been created in certain office-holding circles in San Francisco over the-announcement of of liquor were seized by the Custom. house authorities off the trainingship Jamestown, which recently artived there from Honolulu. On her arrival Commodore Glass reported to the Collector of the Port that there were on board a number of packages consigned to gentlemen in this city, This, in the opinion, of the Collector, relieves the parties involved from the charge of smuggling, He seize the goods, no duty having been paid of them. Accordingly. Inspectors raided a butcher wagon aud ‘captured the packages of brandy, gin ties, -prominent among whom are Mayor Bryant. J. ©.
