Che DMy * Transcript, NEVADA CITY,.CALIFORNIA,, . LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, ee A SERIOUS CHARGE.—Pearl Ladd, of Rough & Ready, an old resident, a man of considerable property and heretofore esteemed as a good citizen, was recently ar. _yested upon the charge of robbery. The circumstances are these: Ladd owned a ranch at Rough & Ready and Mat. Adams worked for him, The latter had about $3,000 in money, gold, dust, specimens, etc., Which he kept under the head of his bed; In February last the entire property was stolen The robbery was committed between breakfast time and evening. On returning to the house, Adams missed on _property and found a window opening to his roomopened, No. traces were found of any one leaving the house. Two. Chi namen at work on the place were suspicioned: and arrested, but were discharged, there being no evidence against them.— Afterwards Ladd was suspicicned, The grounds upon which the’ suspicions are based are as follows: On the day of the robbery, Ladd and his wife went to Grass Valley without saying, anything about it toany one. This they ‘were not accuswmed to do: The shipments of gold made by him were closely watched, and it issaid one bar was found which contained alloy and waseither from coin or jewelty. Recently Ladd/sold his property for a. considerable sum ‘and started for the East with his family, and on the eve of his departure was arrested by Marshal Snow of Grass Valley. Itis stated that the purses to. which Adams is willing-to swear were found in Ladd’s possession.— The prisoner was brought to Grass Valley Nod placed under heavy bonds to appear before Judge Byrne for examination, The friends of the defendant aré confident that he will be. able to vindicate, himself from the serious charges against him. A Ricn Strixze.—On Wednesday last, Leeth & Barton made arich strike on Deer Creek. They found a quartz! pocket from which in a few hours they took out over $600 in gold. This lucky strike was made near the door of Leath & Co’s cabin and men had been walking over it for years. Quite a large number of these pockets have been found in the last few years near the mouth of Wood’s Ravine, and in some instances several thousand dollars have been found in a pocket of a . . few inches in diameter. We believe they are generally made up of decomposed ; quartz. There must be a rich ledge somewhere in that vicinity. A'Smarr Doa.—A dog owned in this city exhibits an intelligence that almost amounts to reason in the performance of his duty. He has been taught to go from his master’s residence to his place of business, for the purpose of announcing that meals are ready, and each day he signifies tothe owner, by Opening his mouth and putting his tongue out, that dinner or supper is waiting. Recently he came down with his message, but the door was fastened. After reconnoitering for some time, the dog jumped up, and taking the knob in his mouth unlatched the door and enfered. Such an act would almest. convince one that animals sometimes reason, = BoLp RoBBERY.—We learn from the Grass Valley National that on Tuesday last Alfred Norris, while on the way from Colfax to that place, was stopped near the ’ toll gate and robbed of his watch and $60 incoin. The victim Says “the men were not disguised, and says he will know them if he sees them again. He says one of the men lodked like a Mexican, was dressed in black and had ona Peruvian hat. The other man-was-apparently an Amcrican, about 25 or 80 years old. He was also dressed in black. Norris came into town 4nd informed officer Sale of the. robbery, who with Norris, scoured thetown in all directions, bat were unable to find any! body answering the description of either of the robbers, This is certainly the boldest robbery that has been committed in our county for a long time.” . 'This rob bery wasCommitted within a half mile o “rass-Valley. : « DeRINe the storm last week a consider. able of fuming was blown, down in the Veinity of You Bet.» pe eet Spring of 18671 FIRST IN THE FIELD! France. We also claim that they are CHEAPER MORE ACCURATE, MORE DURABLE, and more easily kept in order and repaired than any other watches in the market. Because in each one of the very numerons parts of which a watch is made up, we attain, by me chanical power, nearly absolute mathematica) precision and uniformity, making every watch of any one style atrue copy of its model. , . _ This similarity in structure reduces:the cost of production; it secures uniformity in results; it perpetuates infallibly any excellence that may be once achieved, and makes it easy to repair any injury sustained, or replace $ny_part that may be lost-or destroyed. — .: ies In addition to these mechanical advantages, our Watches are simpler in structure, and therefore } Stronger, and less likely to be injured than foreign watches. How they run under the hardest trial watches . can have, is shown by. the following letters : PENN. RAILROAD COMPANY. OFFICE OF-PH®-GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT, ) ALTOONA, Pa., 15th Dec., 1866. ‘ Gentlemen : The watches manufactured by you have been in use on this railroad for several years by our enginemen, to whom we furnish watches as part of our equipment. There are now some three hundred of them carried on our line, and we consider them ‘good and reliable time-keepers. Indeed, I have great satisfaction in saying your watches give us less trouble, ard have worn and do wear mich longer without repairs than any watches we have ever had in use . on this road. As you.are aware, we formerly trusted to those of English manufacture, of acknowledged good: reputation, but as a clase they never kept timé as correctly, nor haye they done In these statements I am sustained by my predecessor, Mr,.Lewis, whose experience extended Over a series of years. Respectfully, ‘ EDWARD H. WILLIAMS. General Superintendent American Watch Co., Waltham. NEW YORK CENTRAL RAILROAD, Locomotive DEPARTMENT, Wzar. Division, ‘g . RocHEstkR, Dec. 24, 1866.“ j. Gentlemen : I have no hesitation in saying that I believe the great majority of Locomotive Engineers have found by experience that Waltham Watches are the most satisfactory of any. for their uses. They run with the greatest accuracy and steadiness, notwithstanding the rough riding of an engine, and asT have hever known one to wear out they must be durable. I hope to see the time when Railway Companies will generally adopt your watches, and furnish them to-allengineers and conductors. In my opinion it would greatly tend to promote regularity ahd safety. Yours respectfully, { CHARLES WILSON, G. Chief Engineer. Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
