The eee ene cee The Daily Transcript. ———————__— — TURSDAY, JAN. 8, 1889. — County Board of Edncation. The County Board of Education have granted grammar grade certificates to the following: Miss Catherine their California University diplomas ; mal School diploma; Miss Belle Finnie on her educational diploma. State Board for an educational diploma. On Saturday ‘next the Board Will hold a special meeting to adopt a course of study for the schoole of the county. The report of the Secretary on the subject has already been submitted, but:the Board has not yet had time to act upon it. “ Mrs. J, G: Hartwell; formerly a teacher in .the public schools of this county, has applied to have her eduBoard decided that they have no jurisdiction in the matter. zaniendl A Pioneer Dies. “Henry Morgan, a venerable and highly" respected resident of Cherokee in this county, died Saturday’ night of pneumonia. He had’ been ill since Christmas. Mr. Morgan” was~apioneer citizen of Cherokee where he had till within a comparatively recent date conducted the store which his son, County Clerk “Morgan, has owned of late. Mr. Morgan leaves a widow) and one daughter, the latter being Mrs. T. H. Hicks. The’ funeral took place Monday afternoon from St. Canice Catholic Church at this city, the remains being taken to Grass Valley for interment. The-deceased was a genial, generous man and of strictest integrity in-all his dealings. His family have the sympathy of all. A Strange Disposition. In the Lord-Dunster contest .over the: Boston Ravine election returns, one of the-election judges testified that he regarded Mulroy, one of*the election board, as engaged in electioneering-on-election day against Lord. Mr. Mulroy’s friends ‘claim: that the statement is entirely incorrect, and that-in truth he (Mulroy) took no part whatever in assisting to secure the élection of Durister, further-than voting for him. . This it is claimed can be proven by numerous witnesses of all shades of politics. It remains to be shown why any of the” election board should make such a statement. Hifs Maiden Case. os F. T. Nilon had. not been installed in the District Attorney’s office over two hours-when-Attorney-Mason sued out a writ of habeas corpus in behalf of Frank Cannon, held for trial on a charge of selling bogus gold nuggets. The case was argued before Judge Walling, and Mr. Nilon conducted his side of it with all the ability and application for the writ was denied. With Mr. Nilon as District’ Attorney and Mr. Lord as Sheriff, criminals will have a poor show in Nevada county. Won The Banner. The richly embroidered silken banner effered by. the Sisters of Mercy asa premium to the Young Men’s Institute in the county that gold the most tickets for the Crphan Asylum Fair’ at Grass Valley, was won by the Grass Valley Branch. _ The Nevada Branch stood second io the contest, selling nearly half as many tickets as did the successful competitors. ‘The material in the banner cost about $100. Visiting Native Sons. W. Walter Greer, Grand Trustee of the N. 8. G. W., and P. B, Johnson, Past President of Sunset Parlor at Sacramento, on Saturday evening visited Hydraulic Parlor at a special meeting held in’ Masonic Hall. The evening’s enjoyment terminated with an oyster supper at J. 8. Holhiook’s restaurant. The young gentlemen were at the table about two hours, it being near midnight when they left the restaurant. * : Business Change. H. F. Fry, a well-known and: popular résident of Relief Hill, has purchased the provision store at this city heretofore conducted ‘by R. H. Foreman. The latter gentleman will remain in the store with Mr. Fry for the present, © ———— “} was troubled with an eruption on my face, which was aseure of constant annoyance when . wished to appear in company. This time the contributions already made 000. These contributions were at the last inauguration-all returned to the donors and the committee still had on hand a surplus which was‘donated to charity. Before criticising the expenses of the inauguration, fault finders should remember that in this case the old Scotch.adage “he. that dances must pay’tke piper” is strictly adhered to.
