GRANT AT THE POKER TABLE.
The Warrior's Impasstve Face was Worth
a Good cal te Bim in a Bluff Game.
A great d -! has been said and written
about General Grant's abilities as a poker
er,
as 4 the early days of his ¢areer after the
termination of the Mexican war, when stationed in Oregon holding a commiss:on asa
captain of infantry, he became somewhat
renowned as one of the most successful pokér players of that wild and comparatively
unknown region. A brother officer who was
then on duty with him makes no secret of
the ‘act that Capt. Grant kept him in a pertual state of impecuniosity, and that varus experts in the mysteries of the game
met the same fate at the hands of the then
embryotic faim J genius and to be twice
chosen President‘of the United States.
“The difficulty we all experienced in —
ing poker with Grant,”’ remarked this officer, “was his extreme reticence and wonderful impassiveness, Ninety-nine men out of
a hundred, under the excitement of card
playing for money, betray their emotions to
& greater or lesser extent; but Grant was a
ophiax that never spoke. He was always
cool and entirely seli-possessad, even when
the et tle had been passed around somewhat
to freely. :
“No one could ever measure the strengthor weakness of Grant's ‘hands’ by any outwar. sign or even by the nature and .size of
his bet. Apparently he was oblivious to his
surroundings, but close inspection’ revealed
the fact that he narrow!y watched his adversaries, and could detect them with unerring accuracy when they ‘bluffed.’ He
would calla man down with a pair of deuces
when it costa round hundred, perhaps, to
see the hand.
“Grant understood the strength of the
age and the weakness of his opponents.
e.did not then comprehend that his mind
was strategical and that his methods of gaming were conducted on military principles.
Subsequent events however, developed that
his gaming was not so much a passion for
vice.as it. was to engage in strife and conquer. He josim lost and his Josses were always small, w.iJe his gains were large.”
n. Rutus Ingalls, who became captain
and assistant quartermaster in 1348, and subsequently quartermaster general, now retiged, was one of the party who played
poker with Grant in Oregon in those 4 fe
and although very adroit he was no match for
the little close-mouthed captain. Ben Ho!liday, the pioneer mail contractor was Jike-°
wise on the poker tapis in the ea:ly history
of Oregon, and so were Joe Lane ond Jim
Nesmith, both Senators from Oregon, the
former the candidate for the Vice-Presidency
in 1860, on the ticket with John C. Breckenridge. Ben Holliday was a most inveterate P shared player.
“But Giant, Lane, Nésmith and Holliday
are all dead, while Kufus Ingalls is hale and
hearty in his advancing years, and willing
