COUNTY a u CITY OF OFFICIAL PRESS
FRIDAY, Avcusr 17, 1866.
CaLirornis,—The capability of’ this
“State fo support an immense population, is
demonstrated beyond question in. the results produced in every department of industry attemptedéompared with uther
coudtriés that hhvednd maintain & popula.
made that we shieta . ever have half the
number to the square miles, it would be re. garded as preposterous, Belgium and Hulland, two of the most populous States of EuTope, contain, the first over 300 and the last
over 200 inhabitants to the square wile.
Manufactures and agriculture have mainly
built them up, the lastin spite of difficulties, suchas few countries have had to contend with. Commercially, they have fallen
behind others. Brussels, the chief city of
Belgium, in 1853 had only 145,000 inhabitants, and in 1850, Amsterdam, the principal one of Holland, enly 228,000. One half
ofthe density of Holland, the least populode of the two, would give us 16,000,000
inhabitants. There is not a reason for population so deneely sapported there, in which
We-bave not the advantage. Their contiguity to-crowded Europe gives them an advantage in securing it. from outside, and
their age in having it oftheir own. But
“that does not touch the question of tapability to support. Commercially, they bave
had competitors that have far outstripped
‘them, which accounts fur the smallness of
their commercial cities. San Francisco
stands alone on this coast, with no ‘possibil.
ity of successful competition, fur whatever
trade can be controlled on the Pacific, by)
any city in the Americas, then she controls
by her position all interior trade. It is
demonstrative of this, that not 20 years old
is anything more than a trading post, or a
harbor for precuring.a supply of water—
that it has 320,000 inhabitants, with every
‘evidence of comfort and wealth, equal to
any city of even. greater populativn_in the
Union, and affords « tax list uf over $80,000,000, and returns a revenue on importations equal or over any other city in the
Republic, except probably threee. Her
merchants and bankers are princes financially—this, notwithstanding devastating
firee—and there are fewer icsolvencies than . . Ba
in other city of the same population. What: .
ever builde up San Francisco will also every other city arid hamlet of the State : and
the capacity and possibility of population
can only be measured by our resources
and our position to command tradé ; therefore the benefit-is reciprocal, We find that
wherever s business puint ie needed, tu become sw distributing agent for this great centre, and contiguous to farming and mining
~~ @iatriots, the towns are recovering from the
