A Brief Recora of Various Matters of Local interest. The roads in the lower part of the county are in prime condition. There is but little dust. One do'lar has been added to each roa land po'l tax that was not paid by last Saturday night. Sunday morning’s passenger train was four anda half hours late. ~The delay was occasioned by -the eastbound train jumping the track five miles below Colfax and breaking an » axle. Grass Vall«y—Telegraph of Saturday evening: John Henwood, Michael Riley; €C. Meldner and Sam Snell will Jeave town to-morrow evening for a trip tothe woods on the Yuba river, for the purpose of killing deer. A stray cow that had been breaking into houseyards and doing damage was impounded Sunday night by policeinan Scott. Sam Curtis, the owner, had to pay a penalty of $3 Monday morning to get the animal back. About eighty ladi-s and gentlemen, most of whom belong to the Young . Ladies’.and Young Men’s Institutes, went from this cityand Grass Valley to Sucramento on Suniay to wi'ness the dedication of the Cathedral there They had avery pleasant time, and arrived home Monday morning in good shape. ; Exhibit Committee Meeting. The committee having in cl arge the making of exhibits cf Nevada county products at next Fall’s Fairs, met at this city Saturday afternoon. There were present Messrs. Preston, Beales, Mitchell, Malloy, Henderson, De Golia and Nickerson. The action of the Chairman and Secrétary in adding yrain and grapes to the special premium list was approved. Messrs. Henry Wicman .of North San Juan, A. B. Driesbach of Indian Springs and G. F, Beales were agpoirted to collect exhibits of their respective locatities and to forward them to the railroad depot for-transportation-. J. R. Nickerson was authorized to commence the work of collecting exhibits for the State Fair, commencing . one.week before the county fair and continuing up to the beyinning.of the State Fair, at a compensation of $8 per day for the time em) loyea in -collecting and in making the exhibit at Sacramento. According to the Chicago Tribune c¢ June 25th, there is much suffering among the Indiana coal-miners, so much that the Governor of that State has felt it necessary to ixsue an appeal for their relief. The Tribune says: If there is not an equal amount of suffering at this moment among the same class of men in Illinois it is certain that tbere soon wi.) be, and that they will be starving iftPev are not sided It is estimated that now. there are nearly ten thousand men out of work, which means that thousands of women and children are also destitute. Moreover, the miners live in communities by themselveS and practically compose the entire population, so tha! when distress comes on they have no neighbors to whom th y can turn. The Sun Frareisco Pust-of Saturday says: Seth Martin, an old miner of Nevada county, talked to a Post reporter this morning concerning the secure which the bursting of the Johnetown dam had created. Ue said that ‘most of the talk in the néwspaper was nonsense and liable to result in a good deal of injury tu Nevada county. “The Ferdyce valley dam,’ he said, county. It is at the head of the north fork of the south fork of the Yuba river. The dam is built sub-tantially of stone, fenced upon‘ the inner side with sugar pine plank, for the purpose of preventing any seepage from escaping. Every particle of water is of value to the Canal Company. “The Meadow Lake dam is upon the watershed of the same stream. It is built of granite and, I think, faced upon the inner side with clay and . gravel to prevent seepaye.
