TRE SULLDOSERS AT WORK.
The Board of Trustees of Sacramento city on Friday afternoon
adopted the following resolutions,
and ordere. them ‘telegraphed to
Washington:
“Hon. Robert T. Lincoln, Secretary of War, Washington, D. C.: At
a meeting of the Trustees of the city’
of Sacramento held this 17th day of
August, 1883, the following was
unanimously adopted and ordered
transmitted to you by telegraph:
“Whereas, Anapparently authentic
rumor has come to us tothe effect that
some Congressmen and ex-Congressymen from California have united
with the hydraulic miners in an endeavor to prevail on you to permit . ,
the appropriation placed in your custody ‘for the improvement and preservation of the navigation of the
Sacramento ant Feather rivers’ to be
used for the construction of dams
therein, we earnestly but respectfully
urge you to.adhere to your original
determination upon this subject—
not to allow that money, or any por,
« tion thereof, to be used in the construction of dams. while hydraujic
mining coutinues, The construction
of dams is urged for the svle /pur-4
pose of alléwing the hydraulid miners, whohave done so muck harm
already to our waterways ayd lands,
to continue their work of destruction—to still pour their détritus into
the public streams—to farther choke
our rivers—to close ngvigation entirely, and to place i still greater
jeopardy the capital of California
with its $2),000,000 of property aud
23,000 populatiory.
“We ask you/then, in the name
of our injured / people, and in the
name of comp.on justice, not to let
.1 the public money be used to add to
our affliction.
“We héreby instruct the City Attorney fo take such legal measures
‘as may be necestary to prevent debris
damg being constructed in the rivers
novth or eastyof this city, and to se‘ore the punishment of all persons
éomimitting, or yttempting to coim7/ mit, such nuisances, :
J. Q Brown, Mayor
“Atteat : { K. ¢ Mick eu; Andvor,”
This declaration of the Sacrainento ring does not vuice the sentiments
of the business men of that city, who
derive from the hydraulic wining re
gions a large portion of their patronage, and it is in order, if they desire
the continuance of that patronage,
to again place themselves on recor:
as they did a few years ago when the
Board of [rade there exposed the
~gophistries of the Bee and the scheming lawyers, who have from first
to last made it their uim to block
every measure on the part of the
State and Nation that is likely to
settle the vexed question once for all
in a way that will preserve all the
best interests involved,
