heavy teams, and in winter it rots away_benéath) Every few yeurs the streets must
be replankud. “In the sutimer season this
material becomes very dry and furnishes an
exculiéht medium fur fire to pass uver.~Besides, the nails. are continually’ drawing
outjund every teain that passes throws mud
or dust in every directiuo. Cabbie-stone,
though one of the poorest pavements in use,
-would, we think, be cheaper and more durable than ‘plank.’ The: ubundunce of good
material. for fuundatiuns, andthe abundant
supply of cobble-stoned that can be obtained withiu a short distance of the city,
would render it cheap. Butthere are many
other, reads which are far superior. The
McAdam and Telford roads ure good, but ure
atbject to objection on account of the dust
-uod difficulty of cleaning. The iost ap-ptoved road tiow in use is the Nicolson
pavement, It has been adopted in San Franclagd And Sacramento, and is tuking the
plage of stoné in many of the Eastern cities.
We eannot give an estimate of its cust, but
-wé Would suggest that the City. Trustees
take this matter into consideration, and see
if something cantut be done to secure some
improved pavement without.adding to the
burden of taxation.
