Had to Take the Back Track. . ‘nner. se
A gentleman of North San Juan having. ’ Grrr Booxs for your children and
business at Grass Valley started out last d6-tf
week to make the trip by the road that
some of our cotemporaries have insisted is
“the best and shor‘est road to the Ridge.”
He left the formerpla ‘e on horseback,m ide
vbout five miles in three hours, then retraced his course and came by the Purdon
grade, He declares it to have been the
worst road he had ever se*nin his lifetime
and he believes it to be the grandest failure
of the nineteenth century. “Why,” said he,
“I don’t believea 10-muleteam could haul
an empty buggy over that road in the Sumnertime.” Itis his belief that the bridge
‘will never be rebuilt, as many who were
‘oremost in getting. the enterprise inaugurated made up their mi,.ds even before this
season's storm: began that the road was a
failure, so far as its be'ngja self-sustaining j
investment was concerned.
