LOCAL AFFAIRS,
Christmas Trees.
N Christmas was observed in the
customary manner in this city, On
Saturday evening presents were distributed in the Congregational, Episcopal and Methodist Sunday Schools,
frem‘Christmas trees. On Monday
evening the distribution took plece
in the Baptist Schoel. :
At the Congregational Church a
handsome tree was put up and beautifully decorated. _Ganta Claus, repLADIES TAKE NOTICE .

-resented by Archie Nivens, «and the
' live Yankee by Chas. Dersey, created
‘considerable merriment. After singang by the school the presents were
distributed. During the evening
Rév. E. Halleday was presented with
a purse of $100 and a fine album,
the donation of friends at the Pittsburg mine*and in this city.
The Methodist School had a beautifal tree, handsomely decorated with
presents. The distribution took
place after a chorus and quartette
weresung. Rev. J. W. Stump was
presented with a purse of $110 75,the
gift.of friends in the congregation
and in this city.
The Episcopal School had a tree
at the Court House: It was very
handsome and after opening exercises
of music, etc., presents were distributed. A purse of $50 was presented
to Rev. A, P. Anderson by his friends.
On Monday night the distribution
of presents for the Baptist School
took place. They had a stand with
a handsomely decorated column instead of atree. The exercists were
~very pleasant.
In all the churches the young and
old enjoyed alike the favors of Santa
Claus, and notwithstanding the storm
the attendance was good and a large
number of presents were distributed.
Advertised Letters.
The following letters remain in the
Post Office in this city, for the week
ending Monday, Dec. 25th, 1871.—
Persons inquiring for any of these
letters will please say,’ ‘‘advertised:”

Terxira, John A. Williams. .
The Great Rash.
The rush at Banner Bros., on the
corner of ad and Pine streets, is
unprecedented. . For the past week
their sales have been enormous, which
is all owing to the fact that they are
selling gocds so low that the opportunity is not lost by customers. We
sawamancome out of their store
yesterday with his arms full of goods,
and he informed a bystander that
he paid $42 for the lot, and the same
goods would cost him $80 at any
other stere in the State. Give Banner Bros. a call. ~
J Flooded.
During the recent storm the rain
spouts which conduct the water from
Kidd’s building got stopped, and
some two feet of water accumulated
on the roof. It is suggested that the
owners of the buildiug will have their
property entered by the Commissioner as swamp and overflowed lands if
the spouts are net kept open.
Snow
But little snow has fallen in the
mountains during the recent storm.
Mr. .Moore, who came down from
_ Washington on Monday, informs us
the snow was only ten inches deep
at Skillman’s, and it is usually deeper there than at any part on the
ridge.
‘Thanks.
Rev. E. Halleday presenta. his
grateful acknowledgments to his numerous friends in this city, and in
Gold Flat, for their handsome .remembrance of him, and especially
_ forthe terms of kindness and high
appreciation by which they enhanced
the value of their gifts, of a splendid
album and a purse of $100 in gold.

This is a season that tries the frame and
the constitution. Ifthere bea weak spot
in either, the chilling damps, the malarious
fogs, the varieties of temperature that mark
the commencement of the Winter season
are sure to findit. There are few systems
that have not a weak spot somewhere, and
the wisest thing that any manor woman cah
do is to fortify it by a course of Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters, and thus keep the enemy
at bay. In war, when a city is menaced the
first thing to be done is to strengthen the
ramparts. The same policy should be
direst foe, malaria, is abroad. If the stomach is weak, this tonic will lend it new
vigor; if the bowels are morbidly sensitive
this alterative will regulate them; if the
liver is inert, this wholesome stimulant
will rouse it; if there is constipation, this
aperient will cure it; if there is nervdus debility, this nervine’will replace it with nervous vigor; if there is impurity in the blood
this depurent will neutralize it; if there is
a cloud on the spirits this exhilarant will
