Se a aa Joseph Kneebone ‘Murdefed and a G 7 A DASTARDLY DEED. te isamer 1 ase Near Spenceville. ; Early yesterday afternabd word reachedsthe county seat that a terrible crime had been committed about three miles this.side of Spenceville in tke lower part Of the county. Sheriff Lord left immediately for the scene. j —— Hy The particulars of the crime so far as could be ascertained up to the time of going to press are as follows: The tutilated ,corpse of Joseph Kneebone, Jr., was found by his father near the latter’s farm. The young man was returning from Sierra City to which point he had been: freighting for Wm. T. Ellis cf Marysville. He had been shot through the breast, his pockets were cut and his boots were pulled off. The body had been dragged into the brush about thirty yards from the spot “where the killing occurred. “It had apparently been there but three or four hours when discovered. COUNTY POLITICS.: beyond dispute that Mr. Simonds would make as good a District Attorney asthe county was ever blessed — : There iz a good deal of talking in a subdued tone about county politics. That talk will become thunderous in volume eight or ten weeks later, and from then tillelection day will go on gathering force until finally it will become absolutely deafening. The relapse will come when sufficient: returns of the vote are in to determine to acertainty who the successful candidates are. The unsuccessful candidates will be most painfully affected by this relapse. It will take the more sensitive of them several days to recover their bearings and again settle down to the stern realities of life. Being a presidential year, this is likely to prove an. unusually good year for Republicanism in Nevada county if the Republicans don’t become over-confident and fall asleep on their oars as they are coming down the home-stretch. Being prospectively a good Republican year accounts for the plentitude of candidates on that side of the house. Do not let it be understood that there are many disciples of that party who are pressing their claims. As a rule they are “in the hands of their friends.” In other words, they have followings of fellow-citizens who recognize in them those qualifications , desirable in public servants. They present lucrative practice (as would in a measure be necessary) to accept a salaried position, no one seems to know; for of all those who are talking about wanting him to, no man has mentioned the matter-to him. There are sundry other Republicans and any number.of Democrats whose names are being taken in vain while speaking of the above-menticned and other offices. The Transcript will endeavor to have something—good or bad, as the circumstances may warrant—to say about all of them between now and convention time. What Two Truckeéites Think. The Republican reporter on Wednesday interviewed a number of prominent Truckeeites on the subject of Harrison’s nomination. ©. F. McGlashan said: ‘I am thoroughly satisfied on Harrison’s record in everything, with the possible exception of his record on -the Chinese question. On this point, charges have been made impeaching his record and Iam now carefully investigating it, and shall do this very faithfully and conscientiously. It is the sky that rolls the world around, and it is easy enough to understand how it does it when the sky -is understood. Salt is a eooler and regulator of electric heat, and the ocean acts a5 a regulator and distributor of surface heat and a purifier of the circulation. It cools and absorbs the heat of the surfave electric currents, and when it gets too cool it warms up again by the aid of volcanoes and mineral ledges in passing through the land. Everything is calculated to maintain an even temperature to the atmosphere next to the surface all over the world. It is the circulation of the earth that builds up the! land, and wherever it comes within the cooling influence of the surface it then depends upon the ail of voleanoes and mineral ledges to keep up the heat necessary to force it to the surface. Whether it issues atthe top-of the mountain or in the valley, and whenever there a e mineral ledges enough found to perform this work, the volcano is no longer a George McDonald ef Downieville is in town. : John M. There is no office in the gift of the people that holds out this year so few attractions aside from the satisfaction a conscientious man (the Republican party tries to elect none other) feels when he knows that he has done his duty to the best of his ability and judgment. The: Republicans of this district are frequently heard to mention the name of I. J. Rolfe, ‘‘the old Athenian” (he should thank his political enemies for that name), when talking about who they will send to the next Assembly, while from the other part of the county C, F,. McGlashan, is being much talked of as a good running niate for his more venerable neighbor. These gentlemen would make a reliable and moving team. Mr. McGlashan has_ before demonstrated his superior ability asa numerous juveniles who pay no more attention to it than they do to the whisperings of the wind. These lads that are permitted by the officers aiid by their parents to be at large at unseemly hours are learning all sorts of . dishonesty and vileness. Deviltry loves darkness, and it is rampant among these unlawful stragglers. Within a short time past constable Dillon has unearthed three organized gangs of thieves ranging in age from eight to fifteen years. Disliking to inyoke the harsh measures of law against these youngsters, so long as there exists a probabilty that they can be otherwise controlled, he let them go upon their sole:inly promising they would hereafter behave themselves. There is good reason to believe, however, that ut least some of them are up to théir old tricks. A close watch of them is being kept, and it is Vary party prejudices in local. affairs, want to see him renomineted. It is conceded on all hands that the nomination of this fearless, vigilant and unassuming gentleman would be followed by hiselection. aes The County Clerkship is a valuable Following are the newly elected officers of Court Pride, A.O.
