EPS HO ROE ATTY S OREN NRE NEI eA RE OE LV RIDER EA A COCR LO ALLEGE FRENTE LLANE EN ENGELS ERR AISI HEREIN ; f ‘FRIDAY, JAN. 25, 1867. _‘VaREats FROM THE Warre Hovsz.— ‘During the eafly part ofthe discussion in . reference to. the impeachment of Johnson, he and ~his friends pretended that the Be > cor arvonindcente were designed for-electioncering purposes and that no Bs be taken in. the matter after v* . and Wale je sept aged srcltglitas cadbig Dood sa 1 ‘ies there were 19,628 deaths of which more than 3510 were in St. Louis alone. In ‘. New. York there were 1185 ; Vicksburg, 210; Philadelphia 834; Savannah, 231 ; . New Orleans, 132 ; Richmond, 164;;Memphis, 889 ; Louisville 182; Chicago 978 ; Jefferson Barrack 149 ; ‘and in Cincinnati, . met. In this they were disap pointed, for no sooner had Congress asgém. Bled than a committee was organized which has since been engaged in closely examining his course, and preparing evidence sustaining the charges upon which he is. to be arraigned, The fact.that Congress has notacted hurriedly upon this ~ question is the best evidence of .a determination to carry it through. The Presi‘dent’ and his friénds are aware of this, and the derisive laugh with which they first greeted the promise of impeachment has ‘ehanged. They are now engaged in making threats of what will follow an attempt to investigate the couduct of the President, and there is good authority for, gaying ‘that such threats have come from. the traitor: who now occupies the White House. We. are told by the evening organ of Johnson that “any attempt at removal will be resisted by armed pow‘er,and it intimates that a Congress will find it more difficult: to marshal cohorts in the field than to discuss questions on the floor “of the capital.” This is probably an idle threat, butwe imagine it came directly * from the traitor who is attempting to dic. tate to the sovereign peoplé of this nation, and is “no more ‘suggestive than the question of Seward, when he asked the people whether they would have Johngon for President or Dictator. Threats from the same quarter are. not new. and will not swerve Congress from its. pur“pose or intimidate the people. They are but “Vapor curling round the rock And meltin air ;—the rock unmoved remains,” "That rock is the will of a sovereign people, determined in the name of truth, jus_ tice and liberty to punish treason wherever found, be it in the Presidential chair or in the highest judicial tribunal of the land. The great fruits which were placed within reach by the result of the war cannot now be taken away, and those who attempt it must fall. This threat is not the first which has¢ome from the President, His Wiehds predicted that he would, at the point of the bayonet, force the rebel representatives into Congress, but the determined stand of the loyal masses caused him to forego his purpose if he really had any such design. These threats, coming . . ‘from Johnson, will, instead of intimidating Congress or the people, only increase their Metermination to take the reins of government out of the hands of the man who.can coolly threaten to use the armed power of the govertimient for the purpose of preventing an administration of law. The army and navy of the nation can hever be used by the Piesideitt for such a purpose, and "ever Shollld it, thie loyal miasses wilt stand, esa Wall of fire between Congress and Hidlelids, ‘The timie for the fall of the Republi¢ has hot Yet cortie, and shold John son attempt it he must go down. The — peoplé Have deterniined that ivbellion Bhall'be: utterly crushed out atid that the government shall be re-established on a basis as firmi as the eternal hills, All who oppose them will be swept away as the leaves before the patamn blast, A Man Nien Heth woe war of murder in the Soath! lt Was the black nian who killed Rhett,” His ratte was Hoface Gréeley. ‘That was enough. IMPLEMENTS.—The value of those implements imported into California last yearwas $487,000, distributed thus: 700 plows, 800 threshers, 1,500, mowers, 1,000 harrows, 500 grain sowers 200 cultivators. 200 gang plows, 100 hay presses and 1,000 horse rakes. When we get in the habit of making all these things ourselves all this money will be kept in this State instead of being sent away as now and consequently our people will be so much the richer. There is but one grand manafactory of these implements now in California and there is room for several niore. et Tus Frencu Soupieks In_MExico.— We interpret the new circular issued by Bazaine with authority from France, tomean that the French soldiers ‘now in Mexico may elect each for himself whether under Maximilian. PORTLAND is being so rapidly rebuilt that over $75,000 a week are paid in wages to the mechanics employed on the new buildings which are being erected in the burnt district. Her citizens in 0 soon and #0 rapidly recovering from their great misfortune exhibit the ‘untiring energy and indomitable. spirit characteristic of Americans, ; A LaTE Sue paper states that a ship Scotch isabout to sail from Liverpool for Galveston. About two hundred and forty of these are agricultural laborers and will locate in the interior of the State.’ REVERSIBLE Boot HEELS,—Some genius has applied fora patent for a reversible boot and shoe hecl. If that will work, and why should it not, the world will save much money and a great deal of awkward traveling. When a heel wears'a little on one side turn it and wear down the other. It appears trifling, but inthe vast aggre” gate it will be a wonderful saving. Curr ACTIVE.—Marriages have increased romarkably since the war. In Ohio the statistics show that the number of marriages for the year ending July ist . was 20 percent; greater than any year during the war, and the same is doubtless true of the other States. Matrimony, it is said, rages in New York, and nota dress maker is to be had for any less important a person than a bride elect. , _ TuE Folsom Telegraph says Congress legislated Stephen J.
