He was born March 22, 1797, was educated asa soldier, served as an officer of the allied army at-the battle of Waterloo, and entered Paris with that victorious army. He -sueceeded his childless brother, William IV.,.as King of Prussia on January 2, 1861. His career since that time proves him to be the chief figure among the crowned beads of the world. Successful in all his wars, being every inch asoldier himself, his great sagacity was early shown in selecting his military commanders—first Von Roon and afterwards Von Moltke—and in choosing Bismarrk as his Prime Minister. But greater than all his military achievements was his unification and consolidation of all Germany into. one impregnable Empire. After overrun“Ring France with his armies in 1870 and making bis-head-quarters at Versailles, he was there proclaimed and}. ‘crowned Emperor of-Germany on'the 18th of January, 1871. The -Empercr leaves one con, the. Crown Prince, and. one daugi.ter — the Princess Louisa—who is the wife of Grand Duke Frederick of Baden. ——— +60 From Kentucky. A’ letter received from Hamlet Daivs, dated Wakefield, Ky. March Ist, says: I arrived at Louisville on the norning of the 27th. after a tedious but otherwise pleasant trip. Itraveled through a great.deal of barren country and the appearances around and about Los Angeles did not near meet my expectations. 1 met with very cold weather at Louisville, but today it is spring-like. I have been visiting since my arrival, nephews and neices who have large families, allof whom gave me a hearty welcome. But, oh! how sad to learn on my arrival, that my dear brother was no more, having died on Jan. 27th from theeffects of a full onthe ice. After traveling over 3 miles with bright hopes of a joyous appointment! But it was God’s willthat it should beso. Give my love to all enquiring friends. H.
