The Truckée Repudlican says: A ‘serious fire ocenrted at Randolph, Sierra Valley; about eleven o’clock Saturday tight. The-fire, broke out in the“barn of G. Q. Buxton, who ke€ps the hotel at that place. The ‘barn contained a quantity of loose hay, and .within, two minutes from the first alarm given, it was enveloped in flames. There were eight horsés in the barn, four belonging to Judd Goddard of Truckee, and. four to Robert Pennman of Mohawk Valley. A strong effort was made to save the animals, but they all perished. Some of them were unhitched from their stalls; but they appeared so stupified with terror they would not leave the barn. A number of . hogs and chickens near the barn also perished. F. Burckhalter & Co.'s stage which was in or near the barn was, burned. The dwelling house and wagon shop of W. Blatchley, a short distance from the barn, caught fire and were consumed. Scaréely anything was saved by Mr. Blatchley. By the strenuous exertions of fire is estimated at $3,500, upon which there-is no insurance. Penman figures his loss at $700. Goddard saved his wagéhs, but lost his horses <and harness. His loss is probably about $800. F. Burckhalter & Co.’s loss is $500. The remainder of the losses, about $1,500, fall upon Messrs. Buxton and Blatchley. The latter lost everything he had, house, furniture, shop, tools, hard wood, lumber, etc. Asubscription to assist Mr. Blatcbley was started at Randolph and Sierraville immediately after the fire, and: the . sum of $250 was raised for bis ben. efit. The cause of the fire is. unbeen the result. of carelessness, Grass Valley Jtems. The. following we get from the Grass Valley Union: . For.the greater part of the time of his residence here he has beén the proprietor “of the Pacific Hotel, on Main street. He was an enterprising and public spizited citizen and his death is much regretted. The people of Smartsville and vicinity have given another instance of their liberality. Last week Thatcher Holmes was killed by a cave inthe Babb mine, heaving a widow and several children. A‘subscription was started for their benefit, and $1,000 were donated. Such liberality is beyond all praise. On Monday afternoon Mills ebtained a George Williams, who has resided . full settlement. with his land agent in Grass, Valley since about 1850, . and deposited a check which he redied Tuesday morning about 3 . ceived from the latter in the Nassan After this transaction he settled his accodnts of his butcher and ‘baker’ which were usually paid on the first of each month. A most horrible and_ almost incredible condition of affairs.in the Vermont Insane Asylum is deseriLed in the report of the legi#lative committee appointed. ta investigate the management of the institution, The the asylum, which is controlled-by a private corporation, was greatly overcrowded, 485 patients being packed inte a space intended to accommo. date but 300 at the most. This, however, is a trifling matter compared’ with the other revelations. Seventy-five of these unfortunates dungeons, dark, damp, foul and per-vaded by undurable stenches. Some were--confined_in—apartments—nine feet by four in size, with air and . ventilation only through auger holes bored in the doors,. The active as well as the passive inflictions put upon these poor pedple proved equally inhuman, Among them was the punishment of the bath, in which the patient, securely bound, is placed in a bathing tub and a continuous stream of cold water allowed to fall upon his head. This torture, it may be remarked in passigg, was one of the most excruciating known in the dark ages, resulting usually in insan-ity or death. To this asylum of . horrors the committee also state that sane men have. been — consigned through fraud and bribery. The picture is as complete as Charles Reade could make it, but without the romance of fiction. The reality is something for the Legislature of Vermont to deal-with promptly and rseverely; for it is too disgraceful for belief, except as attested by an official investigation such as has produced this astounding report. A coLoRED man named Brickhouse was murdered at Holly Springs, Mississippi, a few days ago, and last Friday and ‘Saturday three white brothers, named Williams were being examined ona charge of being the murderers. In the meantime the colored men from the farms adjacent to Holly Springs had collected in town to the fhimber of five hundred, intending to lynch the prisoners if the Court-discharzed them, and the Sheriff had summoned a large posse of citizens to protect them from the mob, — . was found at the State Capitol, which was so curious that Deputy Controller Barrett presented it to the Agassiz Institute, through the President, Dr. Logan, As nothing of the kind was ever seen before, it has been named the clock bug. Tue total amount of treasure received at San Francisco last year -from all sources (except such as went there in the pockets of individuals) was $15,097,580. Total amount exported (except that which went away }in private hands) $12,349,742. Apparent gain, $2,747,838. . SE SRC EUE Sam CHAPMAN has just completed . a large sized model of the stage ship to be used in his play of ‘Hidden Away,’’ which is to be produced at the California theatre in San Francisco, in September. ~ One of the attractions of the Baby Show in San Francisco is a child three months of age, which weighs only 234 pounds.
