Why a Self-Appointed Court Reconsid~ ered One of Its Resolutions,
Texas in 1837 had no jails, and had
just cut loose from Mexico, and there
were but three modes of punishment,
small whipping, large whipping and
branding for minorcrimes. For murder, horse stealing and forgery—death.
I was a soldier in General Houston's
army and recall one instance of horsestealing where the guilty party was
permitted to escape. It was in Montgomery County in 1887. The man was
