Thescramble for places to féed
at the public crib is unprecedented. Itreminded an old government employee today of the time
before the Republican party came
into power. © He recalled the case
of a particularly tenacious officeseeker who had gone through all
the stages. from the hotel to
boarding house, and finally had
landed in the cheapest of the
cheap, down by the river. His
‘. aspiration had likewise decreased,
and his sole ambition was to become a watchman in the treasury.
One day, while crossing a canal
bridge he discovered a man’s body
floating in the water. On examination, he found that the dead
man was none other than a watchman in the treasury whom the
very day before he had seen
about the building! Giving a hasty
alarm he ran to the treasury and
rushing breathlessly to the presj ence of the secretary, he demanded an appointment. to the vacancy.
“Why, my friend,” said the
secretary, ‘‘the place has already
been filled.’”
“Filled,” shrieked the madman,
“by whom? why, I just saw his
dead body pulled out of the
canal,’ :
“T don’t doubt that,’ said the
secretary, ‘‘but the place is filled,
nevertheless. I have given it to
the man who saw him fall in.”
Last Monday week a Chinaman called Jimmy. crossed ‘the

stole a package of goods from a
logging camp. near Semiahmoo,

stopped him, but was taken “and
placed in confinement at Sémiahmoo. During the night twelve
men took him fromthe lock-up;
cut off his queueand hung him up
to a tree thrée times, and then
told the Aerrified and half-dear
fellow-to get back to British territory. The act was done as a
warning to Chinese invaders.
