THE DAM BI LL,
As its opponents unctuously call it—
with an “n” at the end’of the word—
has not yet passed the Senate, owing
principally to the dilatory and obstructive tactics of the opposition.
This child’s-play on their part shows
plainly that they dare not squarely
face the issue on broad and honest
ground, but are seeking to slaughter
the measure by petty trickery. Should
they. suecced—as they will not—it will
demonstrate nothing as regards. the
will of the-people of the State on the
mining question. I do not believe
that the theory of legislation is for representatives to indulge in monkeyshines, but that the intention is to discuss the merits of measures pro and
belong to the backwoods age, and
were long since played out in respectable and intelligent legislative . bodies
in this country. ‘This is one reason
why I would tike to see Clunie elected
to Congress. Though he is as indifferent toa snub asa rhinoceros to the
prick of a pin, his Achille’s heel would
be punctured if he attempted to cut up
any of is nonsense in the House of
Representatives. In other words, he
would be sat down on as hard as he
was by the President: when he attempted to instruct the Chief Magistrate of the land in his policy and appointments in California. It .is -he
and his class who have set themselves
up as George Hearst’s keeper that has
rendered Senator Hearst’s influence a
nullity in Washington.
As I write, Senator Walrath is putting forth his best energies to get the
dam bill before the Senate on its third
reading and final passage, and even
before this letter is finished the bill
may have met its fate, though I am
hastening to catch the -mail. ~ However, if the bill should be acted on today your people will know the result
before this letter is in type. The prediction is that the bill will pass, as no
Senator who has voted with the bill
in its preliminary stages has manifested any symptoms of fallingdown, and
if the bill passes the Senate it will be
an easy game to pass it in the House.
To me, and I suppose to the home
readers of the Transcript, the debris
before this Legislature; but as a matter of fact this Legislature has so trifled away its time that, aside from
this bill, there is but little on foot that
is of interest to the general public, unless the general public actually cares

THE WEEK’S DOING. .
Sunday, April 18th—The members
of the general @ommittee will ‘meet the
delegatesand other visiting Natives at
Colfax and accompany them to this
city, arriving here in the early evening. The entire membership of Hydraulic Parlor will be in waiting at the
depot here to assist in escorting the
visitors to the hotels.
Monday—The Grand Parlor will
convene at 1:30 o’clock in the aftersions until such time as the business
shall have been: completed. ‘On this
tend and become acquainted with the
guests of Hydraulic Parlor. There
will be music by a full band; remarks
by prominent pioneers of the State
who will be invited to come from
abroad; R. E. Robinson as a member
night clerk, that it might be well to
make dn investigation. The latter
went to a room occupied by T. H,
Ford and T. W. Lord, new arrivals
from Forest City, Sierra county. He
knocked loud and long on the door.
“Eh?” growled one of the inmates.
“Did you turn off the gas when you
went to bed?” asked Wells.
“Of course we did,’”’ was the reply.
“You must be mistaken,” persisted
the clerk.
* “Guess I know,” mumbled the
voice inside. ‘“G-long and give us a
rest.”
But Wells felt positive something
was wrong, and kept insisting till one
of the men unlocked the. door. As it
Was opened a volume of gas rushed
out almost knocking him down. He
went in and found a full head of gas
pouring out of the unlighted burner.
Ford :and’ Lord had : been in
bed half an hour or more, and had
noticed nothing wrong. Had Mr.
Bixler’s olfactories been out. of trim
that night, Messrs. Lord and Ford
would not have required any breakfast yesterday morning.

A Desperate Fight with a Deer.
The other day as Sam. Lusk and
another man were driving the Nevada
City and Downieville Stage Company’s
train of pack-horses over the trail between Camptonvilleand . Downieville,
a big deer of the buck persuasion came
dashing towards them. The snow was
so high on both sides of the track that
of the City Trustees will exiend the
freedom of the city to the Natives; L.
S. Calkins will on behalf of Hydraulic
Parlor welcome the Grand Parlor ; and
there will be a good time generally for
everybody.
.
Tuesday—An entertainment, the exact nature of which has not yet been
determined upon, will be given at the
Theater.
Wednesday evening—There will be
a grand ball at Hunt’s Hall. All the
preparations for this will be made on
the most extensive und elaborate scale
with the intention of eclipsing any
party heretofore given in the county.
The souvenir program will be the richest and most novel to be found in the
market. The music will be of the
highest order, and» the decorations
will be superb.
Thursday evening—There willbe a
banquet confined to the members of
the order, and it is expected there will
be fully 250 present to partake of it.
If the business of the Grand Parlor
is completed by Friday noon, the. visiting Natives will that afternoon be
shown the great quartz mines of this
section. Ifthe session should not end
8o soon, the mines will be visited Saturday.
