THE : Roaps.—Road overseers
ty, and-we hope:they will labor faithfally
to maintain good roads in their respective
districts. Thepleasant weather has come
order now, they will become hardened by
next wiriter and remain passable much
longet than they otherwise wotld. Many
of our overseers neglect the highways us
til Fall, and after the first rains come the
roads can no longer be traveled. Now is
the'time; and the overseers should not allow it'to pass.unimproved. It would be
difficult to find a strip of county road five
miles in length, from Bear river to the
Middle Yuba, that could be passed over
‘places gullies are washed out, bridges undermined or gone, and in some places
the roads ‘blocked “by fallen trees. If the
overseers’ will go energetically to work, in
six weeks these roads can be made good.
The chief object should be to geta firm
road that willturn water, and it should by
all means be well drained. No road can
be kept in good order where water is allowed: to. stand upon jt or find its way off
by a drain along the centre of the highway. It is ‘an easy matter to ridge a road
and dig drains on the sides of sufficient
capaeity to carry off the ‘water. Ifour
overseers will go to work in earnest we
ite satisfied that the roads can be greatly
improved without a larger expenditure
than is now:made every year. The people of Nevada county pay annually from
ninety to one hundred thousand dollars to
maintain good roads. This inclades all
taxes-and tolls and ‘is certainly sufficient,
if properly expended, to maintain good
roadsand passable bridges. Let overseers
throughout the county try if they can’t
improve on the administration of their
predecessors, and so perform their duties
that the roads will be better at the end of
their terms than when they entered upon
their duties. If reform and improvement
is needed in any one thing more than
another in the county, it is in the managementof the county roads. It is true that
many.of the evils arise from a defect in
the present road system, but we are satisfied that there are many that may be removed by a faithful performance of duty
by the road overseers. Let them make
_the:best:of a bad law and we are satisfied
that a markedimprovement will be apparent in the county roads twelve months
hence. ,
