Brows & Carxins. . . Proprietors. PUBLISHED AT “CALIFORNIA, ecies TERMS: NE NON Gs os vans cane cs $7.00 Pan WEEK.. Heres 2 Za re FRIDAY, MAY 14, 1886. Tur combined weight of the President and his Cabinet is said to be nearly a ton, and yet there have been some Secretaries of ~—Postmasters and Attorneys-General who have carried more weight in public estimation, Clay, Webster, Seward, Fish, Cameron and ‘S. average avordupots, who were in°” tellectual giants compared with some of the present heavy weights in the Cabinet. A Wasumarton correspondent reports the follawing bit of conversation: ‘‘Can’t you tell me another snake story, Senator?’’ asked a newspaper correspondent, as the climax of a long conversa‘tion. “No, Thaven’t had‘a drink for a week.’’ The Senator’s reply undoubtedly beats the wildest pos’ gible snake story. Tux proposition of Senator Fair to'corral the Apaches on Santa Catalina island has only one defect. Theisland would be a secure place, easily guarded, and the Indians could not raid the whites. But who is to catch the Apaches and.put them on the island ? It is very much like the old story of belling the cat. A Connecticur justice has just created a precedent by giving a drunkard his choice between an enlistment in the regular army and going-to jail. The man chose the former alternative, and was enlisted at Fort Schulyer, * > ——— A taw firm at Le Mars, Iowa, stimulated by'the prospect of receiving half the fines, ‘has commenced prosecuting druggists all over the State for neglecting to make monthly returns of. their sales of liquor.
