Houston boasts of quite a large number of Nimrods who go out almost daily to hutit prairie chickens and pther game. Daylight finds the hunters—for they gencraily, like their dogs, hunt in pairs —leaving the farm house where they have passed the night. At the word of commaud the dogs leap into the wagon, anda few moments’ drive brings the hunters to a ‘likely fieltt.* < 4 The hunters alight, slip a cartridge into each barrel of their guns and turn into the field. The dogs are eager for the sport to begin, and at the words “Hunt ’em up” and a wave of the hand spring out into the stubble at full speed. Whe dogs work from the edge of the field to the centre, cross, keep on to the other edge, return and cross again, covering tho field in ever varying and irregular circles. Now and then one pauses, and snuffs the wind blowing down the -field, or turns quickly aside from his course and follows up for a few yards an old scent in the hope of finding it grow stronger. **"" Suddenly one of them, running at full speed in long, elastic bounds, with ear and tail waving as he leaps, falls flat on his beily as if paralyzed and remains as motionless asastone., Quick as isthe movement, the other dog has also crouched and is pointing at the first. dog, “backing him up” with implicit confidence, though the scent may not yet have reached his keen nostrils. The sagacious ‘animals turn their heads and look back at their masters with intelligent eyes, as if to say: ‘Hurry up; here they are!”’ The men move rapidly and noiselessly up to the first dog. The intelligent animal, who'lias not moved a muscle except to turn his head and look back, rises slowly and crouchingly to his feet, and with nose extended steals slowly forward intelligerice and wary caution expressed in every movement of his eloquent body. His feet are lifted and put down like paws of velvet, and bis progress is noiselessand as true as the needle to the pole. The hunters follow carefully close behind, guns cocked and ready for use. Down goes the dog as though shot dead, and this time he does not dare to look back, the tremor of his body giving warning that hecan go no farther without walking into the covey. The men take one, two steps—whiz, whirr, three birds rise—two to the left, one to the right. Bang! bang! -bang! —Houston Post. HONITON LACE. \_ Where and How Queen Victoria’s Wedding Dress Was Made. , Honiton lace is said to have been first dmtroduced by ‘the Flemish, who took refuge in England to escape the persecutions of the Duke of Alva. Many Flemish names are still to be found in the neighborhood’ of Honiton—namely, Stocker, Murch, Maynard, Trump, etc. In 1660 there was such a demand for it that France thought it necessary to issue a royal ordinance providing that a mark should be affixed to imported English 1767 gave the first great check to its production. Queen Adelaide tried to revive it after 20 yéars of severe depression bi‘) ordering a skirt made of sprigs, copies of natural flowers, commencing with the initials of her namé, for a very debased and hideous set of patterns had come In. This does not seem to have produced a eat revival of, the trade, and when ueen Victoria required her wedding lace it was found difficult to‘ provide the workers; but eventually a dress worth $5,000 was made at the small fishing village of Beer. The English royal family have been the most constant patrons of Honiton lace, and have done immense good in keeping the trade alive. ; A Tramp’s. Bustle. A tramp called at a residence the other day begging for “something to eat.” His clothes. were very much the worse for wear, while soap and water had been economically used ifi preparing his toilet, The lady of the house fixed him up a lunch in a paper and handed it to him at
the door. He repaired toa grassy seat in the yard and unfolded a bundle.which he had with him, and stowed away in said bundle was a variety of victuals. He assorted the viands and began to store them away in the back lining of his coat, biscuit, potatoes, cake, etc., until ib looked as if he had on a bustle. He had prepared himself for a long tramp, and our citizens had furnished the rations,—Marietta (Ga.)
