/ NEVADA CITY, CAL. 5 enenonenl LOCAL AFFAIRS, . Fraudulent Warrants. Wé understand that about three years ago fraudulent Watrants were issued from the Clerk’s office, on’ the Road Fund, to the amount 6f about $10,000; and alterations were made in the Couuty Auditor’s books to correspond with the transaction. When the first of these Warrants was presented for registration the for2 —_gery was. detected bythe Deputy Digestive County Treasurer. Notice was given the County «Auditor -at the time and the relatives of the Deputy came}. forward and’ advanced-the money te. _tedeem the-warrants; but~the~books of the Auditor have“ undergone no change since that time, although the warrants, as far as has been ascertained, have not figured as a part of the county indebtedness. The Board of Supervisors, yesterday, appointed J.J. Rogers and T. C. Plunkett to go over the books and ascertain everything in relation to the inatter, It is thought that there are other warrants out in addition to the above and the Board have determined to sift it to the bottom: They had no knowledge of the: transaction until. afew weeks ago. As’ soon as the experts have investigated the affairs “a full report will be made. We did not intend to refer to this subject until the committee had made their report, but it being the topic of conversation.on the street we have deemed it best-to relate the facts of the case as we understand them, ><. Robbers Ahout. ae Thieves have commenced their op~ erations in this city, and citizens will do-well to have their fire arms in good order andkeep'a sharp look out. About 12 o’clock on Thursday Bk _night, the house belonging to Miss Gibson, in the rear of the National Exchange Hotel, and occupied ‘by Mrs. Cro8sman, was entered. Mrs. Crossman heard the noise in an adjoining room, but thought it was her daughter, and called to her. Receiving no reply she lit a candle and went into the room and saw a man going out of the back ‘door with a. trunk on his shoulder. She halloed “murder’’ at the top of her voice. The thief heéded her not, but ransacked the trunk thoroughly, and finding no money or other valuables, left. the. contents. scattered about the yard. Many persons who were in attendance at the party at Tem. perance Hall heard the screams of ’ the woman, but were unable to ascertain the locality it proceeded from until it was too late to do any good, Old Time Party. The Old Time Party given by Mr. Millington, on Thursday evening last, at Temperance Hall, was a grand success. We believe it was the first party of the kind ever given in this city. There were over one. hundred couples in attendance, and all seemed to enjoy themselves ‘to their heart’s content. About thirty couples were dressed in very ancient style; imitating those-of-the-days-of "76, Not only the ladies but the gentlemen,in their costumes, looked grand, We venture the assertion that there were more ‘‘corn starch”’ figurg heads at Temperance Hall on Thursday evening-than—ever congregated together at one time in this city before. We always had a dread of old age, but flatter ourselves that the feeling has passed away, and we long for the days when we shall be called “‘orandpa’’ without the corn starch to make usso: Taking it all in all it wasa gay evening, and one long to be remembered by the participants. Carpet Lost. On Wednesday a carpet, containing about 40 yards, was lost off a wagon between Nevada and Grass Valley. A small chair was also lost at the same time. The carpet ‘and chair belong to Mrs, Maguire, who is residing on Main street, corner of} School street, Grass Valley. Whoever finds the articles will confer a. great favor by informing Mrs. Ma-} guire, or W. H. Davidson, of this city. 5 alge Buchanan Mine, The Buchanan mine, situated above this city, and owned by Peter Hansen &,Co., is turning out some splendid rock. There is a streak of yellowish quartz running through the ledge, which shows free gold in large quantities. The gold is fine, but there is plenty of it. HENLEY’s CELEBRATED IX, BIrrers are recommended by all physicians to Dyspeptics and for all Complaints of the Liver and . snothér column: teb7-3m 4 Periodic Disorders. = The paraxystiaii maladies which are char. acterized by heat and cold, prevail extensively at thi8weason, and it is a curious fact that in many pats of the country where they are prevalent, other diseases, that bear no general resemblance to feyer and ague, or remittent fever, assume a periodic type, Thus, in many-sections infested with chills and fever, rheumatism, neuralgia, hysteria, diarrhoea,w&c.; sometimes become intermit: ¢ tent, thereby indicating that they have been engendered by. the same poisonous exhalations which produce the first named disease. In all these masked cases of ague—for sueh they are—as well as in the regular intermittents, the most safe and reliable remedy that can be administered ig Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters. Neither quinine nor arsenic are needed, Both are in the highest degree dangerous, and are sure to leave sad traces of their-poisonons action in the Bystem, whether they arrest paroxysms or not. In many instances all the so-called specifics of the “regular” materia medica utterly fail to “break up” intermittent and remittent disorders. But the great vegetable tonic never fails. Thespasm of the minute blood vessels which causes the chill, is the result of nervous weakness, produced by the debilitating Operations of an unwholesome atmosphere, and the. tone and vigor given to the nervous system by the Bitters, enable it to throw off the disease. The wiser policy, however, is to anticipate attacks ofthis nature, by arousing all the latent energies~of . the body at the commencement of the moist and chilly season, with this incomparable antidote. By pursuing this course, ‘intermittents, remittents, rheumatism, colic, bilousness, dyspepsia and pulmonary affeetions may always be. prevented, ‘A Card to the Public.
