hasta mance RBIS LINE a ‘we. haveTuesday, May 16, 1877. Wild it be Started up? Several weeks since we announced apon what we believed to be good authority, that negotiations were pending, for the purchase of the Star Spangled Banner mine, Of late ‘heard nothing — about it. Has the project been abandoned? not, for_we feel confident} e big thing outof it, As: nedr as we * the 620-foot level, the people who are posted; declare when th _gideration of capitalists, and the deal of ground, This tax is collec° tions therefor previous to the Ist day he corralled two-fmountain cats, © that that mine, if properly developed, and economically managed, can be made to pay handsome dividends. There is no question about its being a fine piece of proverty, and that ‘somebody will make a oan remember something like $900,8 taken out of the mine, and “company quit work they bich paid $12 per ton, but by sonie tuaecountable mystery it cost_$13 per ton tw.mill it, and then they gaye up the work. The mill, hoisting works é&e. were) gold to the Nevada Foundry, and not a day's work has been done on the mine for eight or vine years, and yet that it will yet be a leading mine in this district, and with that belief it seems strange that a company can not be formed for the purpose of opening it up. Everytbing is cheaper than it was at the time the works were closed down, and the quartz prospects in that immediate vicinity are showing up well. Then wby should the Bunner not be worked? The North Banner, the extension of the Star Spangled Banner, has a fine looking ledge which is about one and a half feet thick, and several experts who bave examined it, assert that it is a No. 1 prospect for a big mine, It is estimated that it would cost about $20,000 to buy the mine and put it in a condition to take out rock. It appears to us that amount is very ingigniticant to raise when the real value of the mine is taken into consideration. We contend this piece of property is well worthy the conprosperty of the town would be greatly enhanced if it was started up. Internal Revenue Taxes. Probably no manin town is kept so busy at the present time as I, J. Rolfe, the Deputy—United States Internal Revenue Collector, for the counties of Nevada, . Yuba, Satter and. Colusa. We strolled into his office on Saturday last and there found bim up to bis’ eyes in work, He had gn his table a stack of letters about two feet deep that he was going for as livelyas “Jim Nye went for the Heathen Chinee.” . Nearly all of these let\ers contained greenbacks varying im denominations from $5 to $100, all Having beea seat to bim from his bailiwick in payment for special taxes of the United States and for stamps. He informed us that Uncle Sam would receive about $40,000 from the collections in his district alone, and this is one of the smallest, alihough it covers a good ted from rectifiers, dealers in liquors, brewers, peddlers of tobacco &o. There are tweuty breweries in this county, and all running except three. The Boca Brewery ‘purchase on an average $1,000 worth of stamps per month, and all the others -combined purchase about. the same amount. The Boca Brewing Co.do not odnfine their business to one county, but it is scattered all over the coast, while the other breweries rely, only upon the local trade iu their vicinity. The law requires all persons liable to revenue taxes to make applicaof May, and we judge from the number of letters Rolfe had on his table that every one of them had managed to get in on time. Rolfe isa very ‘efficient officer and gives the best of satisfaction to all who have business with bin. : > iad Mountain Cats. P The Duteh Flat Forum says Mr. Martin, the nightwatchman of the Liberty Hill mive at Liberty Hill, while attending to bis duties, has on several occasions had his lunch stolen. Knowing the thieves to be wild animels of some kind, he con~ structed a box trap to cateb thew, if possible, and stop their further depredations on his, meals. It proved successful, asin two evenings at your city, I wandered into your Theaq the Sjate. = ss tre Saturday night, to hear a performance which I was told would not amount to much. Before I left, let me say, I was delighted: It hasbeen my good fortune to bear fine music in every clime. Ol ‘Shandon’s bells” have a magic sound. The melting cadence of the “‘Sistrine Chapel,” as they roll out the ves-pers, would enchant any man. I have beard masses at sunset on the ocean. I have floated on lake ‘‘Como, and Hatenedto— strains from voices, which would carry one, a8 “Orphegs’’ did, to the gates of -purgatory. . Therefore, when I say that in a’ miniug towo, in this far oft country of California, the performance of Saturday night was creditable, I amgiving but faint. praise P those who conceived and carried out the programme, I have not the pleasute of knowing those most interested; but I-am told-thatto-Prof, . Chase an@Mrs. Deal, is due the suceoss of the undertaking. The former has, with great fidelity,, drilled the chorases.and the solos, and the Natter trained the young fuiries for theix.work. ‘It would not be just, where ali.was so good, to discrimi-, nate; yet £ tannot belpmentioning. the beautiful songs of Miss Gray, the sulo of Miss Daffy, the exquisite wir rendered by “Miss Hupp; and the charming performance of Mis Hid behind the scenes was an’echd= Ican hear it yet. To my ear, liowever, the charm of the eveu'ng was the trio sung by Misses Urmy, Byrne and Doffy, The rich alto notes of a-wild bird in the woods, while Miss Doffy’s high notes gave a trampet sound, The solo of ‘The Mountain Child” was exquisitely given, and all concerned may congratulate themthing to criticise; but to any one tio has a fault to find with the performance of ‘‘Laila,’’ £ would siaply suggest that they’try to do it better. I shall not soon forget those fairy chili dren, and {the ladies who made ope night of my sttanger life bright. ‘‘Honie, sweet home,”’ touches the heart when far away from all we love. Can't we have the operetta repeated? A STRANGER, = r Personal. prietor of the ‘‘Pacific Life,’’ published at San Francisco, made his ‘appearance in this city on Sunday evening last, and after spending yesterday around the city, left on the train this morning for home, The Col. is # 80n-in-luw of the Rey.
