a A OE Fg F 7) 2a re az — pr nes aoe * (THe Evecrions tats FALi.—During the coming Fall two elections will be held in this State. On the sixth of September a general election will be held for members -of the Legislature and county officers.— There will be no State officers chosen at been extended to'four years by the amended constitution. The second election will be held on the third: Wednesday in October, for the purpose ‘of choosing a Judge for the _ ‘Supreme Court in the placé of Chief Jus-. ‘tice Sanderson: At this election Justices of the Peace and Constables will also be . elected: We notice ‘that soitie exchanges name the State Superintendent of In“struction among the officers to be chosen at _ she judicial election, but his term does not ‘expire until he has served four years. As the Senatorial question will enter into -sithe general election, and county. officers are also to be chosen, it is likgly ‘that considerable interest willbe manifested, especially in the Primary contest of the Union party.. In Nevada county, one.Senator, four members. — tof Assembly, a Sheriff, Collector, Recorder, ‘Mlerk, Treasurer, District Attorney, Assessor, Surveyor, Superintendent of Schools, ~ Public Administrator and Coroner are to be elected. The canvas will probably be open‘ed by the County Central Committee on next Wednesday, asa.time will then, in all probability, be fixed fur the County Conven‘tion. ay . The Primary contest.will be confined to ‘the Union party, as the Central Committee will doubtless prescribe a test which will ‘exclude all others. . Such a test is demanded, because if all are free to participate the * old elements, of discord and disunion might _ enter and destroy the organization No political party could exist long if the mem_ bers of an antagonistic organization were perinitted to participate in the formation of . {onventions and the construction of platforms. The work of the Union party is not "Yet accomplished. It has its part todo ia the great work of reconstruction, and Unton men.should see-thut itis kept free from ‘the leaven of modern Democracy; until its great work is accomplished. If there are theads , “who do truly repeut of their sins and earnestly seek the true light,” let ay them go to work after the nominations aremade and show their devotion by earnestly working for the success of the Union party. Tue Fourty oF JuLy.—Quite a large mamber of vitizens met at the Court House on Saturday evening to talk of a Fourth of July celebration Hon. A. C. Niles was elected Chairman and R. H. Farquhar chosen Secretary, A letter was read frum the Grass Valley Committee, inviting citizens ‘of this. place to participate, but after passing @ vote of thanks, it was unanimously voted to getup a celebration in this city, A Commitiee was appointed to devise a plan for the « lbration, see how much money could be raised and report on next.Saturday evewing. The fullowing gentlemen were appointed: Judge Belden, James Whartenby, John A. Lancuater, Isaac Williamson, N M, Barwett, R. H. Farquhar and E. F. Bean. » «The Committee met yesterday. Several " mMewbers were sv disgusted at the remarks of certain parties in regard to their motives _ fe acting, that they refused tu have anything £0 do with the atfur. The Committee was selected from the beat citizens, actuated by wo other uiotive than that the Anniversary o: _yihe Nation's birth: should be properly observed Their motives were misrepresent. #4, and we do not blaine them for refusing to.act. They met yesterday, determined to 4 bis. life! Isis well established that Buoth ~ that time, the terms of those officers having . work for the Vice President . ending May 27th, amounted to $1,134,024 ,. Powsouiwe THe Vict Pxesiwext.— Wills’ Spirit Aaime that Andrew Johnsou’s strange cunducton the 4th of March was" not caused by intoxication nor si¢kness, but that some deadly poison had been administered in his drink with a view to take stationed himself near the path ofthe President on the 4th of March, for the purpose of assassindting him, and at the same time . it was hoped that the poison should do its Wilkes’ Spirit sxtys: ‘Phe disclosure of the instructions distributed among the adsassins, that ~they were at liberty to use the blade, the pistol, Lor the bowl, but they must bear in mind the latter had once failed,” seems to be conclusive upon this point, and will doubtless suggest some important recollections to the President’s mind. His powerful nature triumphed over the poisonous draugbt, and and thus, in addition to an-invaluable life being saved to the uation, we are gretified in the conviction that one who has always been a sober, self-respecting statesman, is now providentially relieved from even & passing cloud on his career.” ~ Tae CextTrat ComMItTEe.—In making up the list of the Union Central Committee. in our Sunday’s issue, the name of Wm. H. Crawford of this-city, was unintentionally omitted. ° The following is a complete list of the Committee : _ Nevada Township—A. A. Sargent Chairman, RH Farquhar Secretary, W. H. Crawford, I. J.
