LINGUISTIC OFFENSES.
Che Erroneous Use of Words in Common
Not agg Reopen children, but the exslusively English population as well, use
man nglish expressions which are
hi hy improper—not common sense,
e call attention to the following:
“Guess,” for sup or think. “I
ess this is right,” should be “I think,”
c. Guess means “to hit at random,”
as “I can’t guess how many cents you
have.”
“Drive,” for to take riding. “He took .
his carriage and drove me to town.” He"
drove the horse, but not me. It should
tbe: “Ho took me to town in his carriage.”
“Some,” for about or probably. "Tt is
some five miles to town,” should be, “It
is about five miles,” ete,
“Storms,” for rains.or snows. Storm is
an atmospherical disturbance and has
reference to air and wind. :
“Right away,” for immediately. “Come
right away’ should be “come at once,”
or immediately.
“Party,” for person. Party is a gathering of people, not an individual. “Who
is that party ?? when one is meant,
should be: “Who is that person or individual ?””
“Posted,” for informed. Ags, “He is not
posted on that matter; post him on the
subject.” Post means to put up a sign or
to drop a letter in the postofiice,
“Stopping,” for staying. As, “He is
stopping with us,” for “He is staying with
us.”
Try and come, do write, &c., for try to
come, to do so, to write, &c. “I shall try
and come to see you soon,” should be,
“I shall try to come,” &e.
. Funny, for odd, strange. As “it seems
very funny to me that he does not come,”
should be, “it seems very strange,’’ &c.
Funny is something amusing, full of fun,
Depot for station. “I will go to the
Allentown depot,” should be, “I will go
to the Allentown station.” . A depot is a
hb a point. Station,a place aloug the
ronte.
Healthy, for wholesome or healthful.
“This is not healthy,” should be, “this
is not wholesome.’ “This frnit is
healthy,’’ means that it is sound not rotten. “This fruit is healthful,” means that
it-is-condusive to health, not injurious to
health.
Just as soon, for just as lief. “I would
just as soon do it as not,” “should be, “£
would just as lief.do it,’’ etc. Soon means
in a short time, not rather,
‘Trading Rats, 1
Studies in natural history, calculated to
excite the wonder ofa young student,
abound in the western regions of America. I know I was vastly entertained
during a trip through Arizona and New
Mexico by my own observation of the
mountain rats, popularly known there as
“trading rats.” I used to lie awake sometimes in order to watch their pranks by
the light of my campfire. Their antics
and gambols reminded me of young kittens at play. They often appeared to
be at.a game of a a They look like
common. rats, save that.they are_lighter

er,. and .their noses are less pointed,
They live in hollow trees re api the
rocks,
But the very funny thing is that, though
they are born oye little kleptoman°
ics every one, they always return something in the place of every article taken
away ; and a queer thing, too, is the fact
that they never steal articles of food.
One night I felt a slight stir. about oF
head. Cautiously opening my eyes,
saw one of these rats tugging poe pet at
my saddle, which I was using as a pillow.
As the saddle was one of California style,
and weighed about thirty pounds, the
efforts of the little animal seemed to be
very ambitious for an animal of his size,
They take away cartridges; knives anc
forks, or anything else they can carry. I
have been told by an old prospector that
he had a whole outfit of such things
“rustled” (that is, stolen) in» one night
and that various objects were returned
in its place.
Articles taken from one place have
been found in a shanty twenty miles
distant. I met one day at a railway
station an old ranchman, who lived at
least. twenty miles from the road, and
gaenciog to speak of these rats, he said:
“I found in my ‘shack’ the other day,
quite a collection ot spoons, forks and
knives hid under a pile of rubbish that
had been brought. there by the little
ro) thieves. Where they came trom I don’t
know, but I know that they carried off
in turn a whole box of 45-75 Winchester
cartridges.”
I laughed and replied: “Well, I have
your cartridges, and you probably have
my spoons, for out of a dozen I have
only two left. As the cartridges will not
fit my Sharps 40-70, they are no use to
me. So if you bring the spoons to Flinn’s
store I’ll see that the cartridges are left
there and you can get them.” ‘The
change was effected in the course of a
few days, and the spoons proved to be
mine and the cartridges his.:

Inherited
Diseases.
In the realm of disease the facts of in
heritance are most numerous and are dally
accumulating. Here, alga, they become terrible, fateful and overwhelming. No fact of
nature is more pregnant with awful meaning than the fact of the inhoritance. of
disease, It meets the physician on his dally
rounds, paralyzing his art and filling him
with dismay. The legend of the ancient
Greeks pictures the Furies as pursuing
families from generation to generation,
rendering them desolate, The Furies still
ply their work of terror and death, but they
are not now clothed in the garb of superstition, but appear in the more intelligible bus
no less awful form of hereditary disense, ~
Modern science, which has illuminated so
many dark corners of nature, has shed a
new light on tho ominous words of the
Scriptures, “The sins of the fathers shall be
visited upon the children unto the third and
fourth generation.” Instances of hereditary
disease abound. Fifty per cent. of cases of
consumption, that fearful destroyer of famiHes, of cancer and scrofula, run in families
through inheritance. Insanity is hereditary
im a marked degree, but, fortunately, like
many other horeditary diseases, tends to
wear itself out, the stock becoming extinct,
A distinguished scientist truly days: ‘No
organ or texture of the body is exempt from
the chance of being the subject of hereditary
disease.” Probably more chronic diseases,
which permanently modify the structure
and functions of the body, are more or leas
Hable to be inherited, The important and
far-reaching practical deducti from such
facts—affecting so powerfully the happiness
of individuals and families and the collective
welfare of the nation—are obvious to refleoting minds, and the best means for preventing or curing these diseases ts a subject of
intense interest to all. Fortunately nature
has provided a remedy, which experience
has attested as infallible, and the remedy is
the world-famous Swift's Specific, a. pure
