We all know that gold, whether
from placer, drift, jhydraulic or
«quartz mines, can only be obtained
by washing thesand, gravel or quartz
sand into the streams, and hence if
fouling or corrupting their waters be
an i‘legal act, alt mining in the State
will in the end be destroyed.

produced, with Mr. Sheridan in, the
titlerole. Speaking of Mr. Sheridan
in this character, the San Francisco
Chronicle says: ‘‘It is many years
since we have seen such acting.”
Friday evening the programme will
eonsist of Louis XI., one of his
favorite plays. Immense audiences
will characterize the Sheridan engagement here.

The State elections in the East resuited most favorably for the—Republican party, according to advices

Father Louis, who, it was thought,
