Since Surveyor Beattie ee to appoint women as inspectors customs, more attempts at smuggling have been detected than ever before. “The women have shown great zeal and aptitude for the work, and the male inspectors, in order to make as good a record, have been exhibiting more activity than usual. The newest expedient for smuggling is the bustle. The bustle now required by fashion is a capacious structure of wire, and ocean travellers of the gentler sex who desire to escape custome duties have adopted the expedient of filling their bustles with merchandise. Deputy-Collector McClelland said recently that bustles were becoming the burden of his life. It seemed as if every third woman arrived from Europe had her bustle filled with dutiable and’ he’ was nearly distracted. There was a large number of seizures reported recently. It seems that nearly every woman who goes.to Europe brin back a meerschaum pi for some male friend. In the bustle of Freulein Charlotte Weinmann, a pussenger .on the steamer Trave, Inspectress Westoner discovered two meerschaum: pipe bowls. os bustle of Mrs; 8; H. On Freulein Weinmann’s Festi and in her baggage were also found thirty gaia erg thirteen. -yards. of velve ty yards of Bee three silk shawls anc many other articles of value, Somé of the stuff was concealed in her bustle. Around Mrs. Harbridge’s waist were found two pieces of cashmere, and another piece was found sewed in the lining of her skirt. In the bustles and onthe ns of the Misses Evans, who arrived on the Rhineland from Antwerp, were found silks and velvets. J. Bierman, who arrived Friday on the steamer Trave, declared that he had no dutiable goods. He was met on the dock bye friend, who approached Inspector .Scherman and told him if he would pass. Bierman’s trunks that gentleman womed make it all right with him if he would call at his office, corner of Broadway and Houston street. The inspector examined Bierman’s trunks, which were found to contain the following dutiable es: Seven books, 2 boxes of mediine, 12 linen sheets, 3 cases draughtsn’s instruments, 6 tablecloths, 1 needle cane, 36 linen nap 12 towels, 1 pocket. book, 72 linen handkerchiefs, 6 fancy handkerchief boxes,7 boxes toys, 1 card » 1 looking’ 70 pieces ribbon, 15 agi and 12 umbrellas, They were ‘Tnspectress M. 8.
