bf ~—-CGanptress — te-adopt —meusures rpoaking on gis, subject, the.beavy Will never get the ballot, . he Dail y Gransevipt, £: . ‘NEVADA CITY. CAL. Sunday, November 11, 1877. a SLIT A a GEO. M, MOTT is our only authorized Agont in Sacramento, He will re ont Advertisements and Subscriptions for tho TRansceieT, and-receipt for us ‘in our name, : Women to Vote. We stated a few days ago that évery man and woman inthe Usited States would be culled upon t> sign, or refas§ to sign, a -petition asking for go amending the constitution as to prohibit the several states from disfranchising United States citizens on n:count of sex. Tout petition has been pretty generally cirenlated hereabouts, and‘oat of abort five bundred persons who were asked to sign.it,., ‘ovly ubont thirteen refused. If a nan had carried ‘i eround, the reverse wotld bave been the cise. This shows: theiatluance of Women, and when they are allowed to vote we just think they will ran the political machine.to suit themselves, and ‘the men will have nothing t» do but uct as directed. When this is accomplished, anew order of things will prevail, and ‘all old politival hacks will-be-requested $> stand aside. In. man of the Grass Walley Union says, ~we are told that every man of the whole country will be asked to sigu the pet tion, andin thut event many a mau who does not believe in’ woman’s suffraze will be sure to_ sign. The women themselves are cirsulating the petition, is why so Many will . , ‘sign. Noone is goibg to argue the question with a fair seeker of ‘siguatures. bere will nut be any use in trying that. If a man comes aronud with such a document he can be “ stood off” with talk, but not a woman. Sbe will get the best of the tilk every time, aud the male brut: who attempts to til back will not get in a word edgeways. Why should ‘they not be allowed tu vote? There dis no good reason they should not do unything they wantto, If the women of the country will sail in, ana tauke the demand for suffrage an unanimous thing, they will carry the day. But some of them will not join in the demand. ~~ Some of them are attending: to buitons, and will not tuke that Ligher view of female destiny which aims at the ballot. Unless the subject of buttons can be eliminated from woman’s care and consideration, we very moch fear she Up at Nevada City the petition is being cirenlated, aud is being signed right and left, Sonie few have refused to sign, but they are ‘rough customers,” ‘aud their names would do no good on tha paper. In a day or. two Grass Valley will probably be called upon for signers to that document. We do not kuow of any “rough customers” uround bere; no Grass Valeyaa could resist a smiling request t» merely sigu # paper, Lo te Deaf, Dumb ‘and Blind Asylum: Report. The Directors of the Deaf, Dumb ‘and Blind Asyluny have filed their report. for the biennial term from July Ist, 1875, to June 30th, 1877, with the Governor. Tiey state that} the appropriation of $110,000 for the ereetion .of permanent buildings, made by the last Legislature, was inadequate to erect one building capadle of accommodating the increasing number of applicants desiring admissiov. The Directors ask, besides the usual allowance of $72,000 for the Hext two years, an additional sum of $130,000 forthe erection of needed buildings, ‘The receipts of the insti‘tution during the time in question umounted to $146,050.18. There is \ balance on Land at present of $11,. 551.29. There are-on ‘the rolls at present 71 deaf and dumb pupils, 44 males and 27 females ; 29 blind, 19 of whom are males and ten femalen. ‘Lhe Board of Directors hawe adopted whut is knowu as the ‘cottage system’’ for the new buildings, for various Teasuns, one of whieh is that it Separates the sexes, and they think will add 26 per cent: to this ett, the morality of the institution, . 4 He SME AN th ee BE te _ PersonaL D, J, Crowley, of ‘Truckee, has been here the past, few days seeing . this is the way the. first victim got . for the foliowing named parties : Oh, the Swindlers! A tew weeks agoa citizen of this county, received notice from Hetherington & Co., 838 Broadway, New York, that he had drawn a watch in a lottery which had recently taken plage. ’ The watch was’ worth $150, so said the swindlers, and there was pa claim on it of 10 per cent., or, in other words; $15 to pay. The citizen notified Hetherington & Co., to send it on C.0. D, The watch came and the money was paid, and upon examination “of the watch it was ascertained the same kind could be purchased for about six bite a bushel, Citizen was.badly swindled and tried to get his money back, but it was no go. Hertherington & Co,, thinking they had found good locality to pursue their rascality, sent about a dozén more notices. to parties hereabouts, and they having become posted, send word back to send -the .watches on. and the aforesaid parties refused to take their watches and they were taken back from whence they came, aod Hertherington & Co. are out the express charges e&¢h way, amounting tonbout $4 on each watch, and Tilé swindling probably realize the fads that this time they did—not make much by extending their: business to Nevada coubty. We understand several innocent parties have written on for their prizes said to have been drawn by them and intend in good faith to receive and pay the ten per cent. If they come, don't accept them, unless you want to be victimized, even on his $15, concern Baptist Church To-Day. Services at the Baptist Chureh at the usual hours.
