A queer fragment of a man, the largest
of three pieces raked out of the wreck of .
a freight train on a Jersey railroad, is .
sometimes seen. making slow progress
along one of the east sie avenues. i

knees, and he uses his hands for feet and
his arms _for_legs, raising” himself from
the ground ‘on beth” hands and swinging
upon his stunaps:

One of these days he expects to get a
pension. The saloon’ keepers: in his
neighborhood all know. him, and. they
would rather give him a-drink than hear
him describe the battle of Gettysburg,

There being so little of him to absorb the
alcohol, ho sometimes gets pretty drunk
on a fow. drinks. But he can’t stagger,
end he has no use for lamp posts: There
is no “reeling, rolling home, boys,’’ in
his. When ho feels so good that he must
whoop ‘er up he just yells.
The last time he got on a spree he
planted himself on a corner and howled
until he woke up all tlie policemen in
the precinct. They thought Buffalo
Bill's Indians had dug-up steele Mackayeo’s property hatchet that_was solemnly
buried in the middle of. a cireus ring and

grouped around him, and, as there were
no loose bricks or other missiles within
reach, nobody was afraid. He shouted,

Two of the officers tried to persuade
him to go home, but ‘he stood upon his
rights as a citizen, and his stumps as
fragments of humanity, and refused to
budge. Then they took him by the collar, and he wound his arms about their
knees and laid them sprawling upon. the
sidewalk, With a hand apon the ground
on cach side of one of the prostrate policemen the legless roisterer hoisted himself
as high as he could and Ict himself drop
on the policeman's back like a pile driver,
expelling a roar fronr him and amusing
the crowd, The threo policemen tried
several ways of lugging the abbreviated
inebriate, and finally adopted a wheelbarrow. IHHo stood in tho vehicle and bellowed all the way to the station, and in
the morning he explained that he acted
that way becnuse he wouldn't jot any sat
isfaction out of a spree otherwise. If he
only had some legs to stagger with, he
would be as quiet. and peaceable as a
drunken dude, but if a man couldn't
