BAD STORY,7 « * A ot About the Awful Experience of a Monk: It was a dark and cold night in winter; the clock of Saint-Nizier-de-Marcigny had just struck nine; the Church of the Convent of the Recollete was illuminated only by the flickering lamp; and the silence was broken only by the whistling of a gusty wind that blew the flying snow against the window panes. In spite of the rigor of the season and the advanced: hour, a woman was piously kneeling on the stone floor not far from the principal altar. All at once she waned to hear distant groans mingling with the tumult of the tempest, She listened; the plaints seemed to be repeated, She was seized with trembling; but, in spite of it, she went forward some steps in the direction of the sound, and distinguished a hollow voice calling at intervals and with great effort, “Help, brother Recollets, help! O God, take pity on me!” A prey to unspeakable terror, the woman rushed from the church, rang at the convent gate and Wernanded . to see the prior instantly. The latter, being her spiritual director, and knowing the austere life of his penitent, thought that she had been the: victim of an aberration of the senses, caused by excessive fasting . and attached no importance to the fact, of which he saw no other plausible explanation, He therefore reassured her soon as he saw she was more calm. A month later one -of the Recolleta Fathers died, His body, followed by all the.religious and by a large multitude of laymen, was taken to the church. The services ended, the cortege. moved toward the vault of the convent. It was situated beneath the church, and was reached by means of a flight of ste being with one of the side chapels and the entrance was closed with a heavy stono. Whén they reached the chapel, some of those present united their forces to remove the stone, As soon as a ray of light had illuminated spectacle which they eted with cries of horror, A corpse in the habit of a monk was kneeling on the upper steps, with face turned toward the ground. The features preserved the expression of acute agony; deep. bites in the handa and the lower arms attested that the unfortunate being had fought for long hours against the torture of hunger, His habit, his shoulders and the skin on the crown of his head had been worn by repo aguines the unyielding stone, which he had yainly struggled to lift; and his contracted muscles, which still showed themselves in bold relief against the skin, pore that death alone had put an end to his desperate efforts. It was the body of a young brother who had been laid in the tomb the month before. M. A man became enamored of a Geryou! man broker's wife, He frightened the timid Dutchman out of the:country and subsequently furnished the abandoned wife falsified proof that her husbaud was ead. He married her—in ‘fact, married her twice. Subsequently he became enamored of another man’s wile, the latter obtained a divorce on the ground of adultery, and the lover, abandoning his first wife, took the divorce out of the state, married her, published the fact of
the marriage, returned toNew York and lived openly with No, 2. Wife No. 1 had him arrested and he pleaded that her first husband was not dead. She set up that she was never married to the German broker, and the adventurous busband was held for the grand jury; but -the indictment was tnrown out on the opinion of the district attorney that there was a first marriage with the German and none with the second husband. @ne of the lawyers in the case was at that time living with the wife of a former client with that client’s knowledge and consent. The opposing lawyer was living with the divorced wife of a former partner without interference from the. partner, with the knowledge and acquiescence of his own wife. And the opinion of the district attorney was written by an assistant who had two wives on his hands at the time. If the case had come to trial on indictment it would have stood a strong chance of ‘being tried before a justice who has two wives living, and was then in contempt of his own court for marrying a second time against a decree of divorce depriving him of the right to marry again during his, first wife's life. “Here's a state of things.’—New York Cor.
