An Interesting Description of This Méember of the Grouse Family—Abundance of
Game in the Arctic Regions. :
the adjective of my title is somewhat superfluous and even tautological if they think
that the ptarmigan is found only in the
polar parts of the earth, while in reality it is
found 1n restricted localities far southward
in the temperate zone, but always at Alpine
heights where the climatic conditions are
semi-Aretic, descending only in thé winter
as the cold lures them to lower levels. They
are essentially cold-weather loving birds,
and it is hardly a good description of any of
their true characteristics to call them
mountain grouse, as is so often done with
phe us. They are not necessarily lovers of the
mountains,
300 00f . clings to the mountain sides, and in the
Arctic, where they can find this requirenent on the levels, they are no more numerous in the rugged lands than. on the stormswept prairies, and even from the Alpine
heights of our own country they descend to
the levels with the winter snows they love
so much,
Ihave often thought it would bea good
idea it some naturalist fully acquainted
with Alpine fauna would make a distinction
oo between “mountain-loving and mountain. abiding animal life, although it might be
hard to do so in some special cases.
when a bird or animal is found in the
mountains that remains there winter and
summer so long as it. can find sustenance,
and when its own kind or equivalent species of the tropics or the polar regions, if
any exist, are found only in the mountains,1
Risks acceptea un all classes of desirable think itis a fairly clear case of mountain-lovvency and a fair profit willbadmit of, guarling life, or @ true Alpine animal. On the
other hand, if, like the case of the ptarmigan, the living object vacillates up and
down with the advance and retreatof the
cold, and its like or equivalent species in the
Arctic is found every where on hills and
levels, it is as clear a caseof a mountainabiding animal, there to be found bécause it

idea that tho Eskimo have been driven to
their country by more warlike tribes south
of them, a short study of them in their
midst would soon. convince any one that
they are held there by a more invincible and
yet more pleasant powor than tribal enemies—their deep-seated love for the cold, and
they would no more emigrate to the land of

ae a anv. eee ae birds and beasts that have their representamost of the year. The Arctic fox, bear,
hare, and, in a limited way, the Arctic deer,
all follow this rule in the snowy whiteness
of their coats. Nearly all of these—the
bear being the noticeable exception—take
‘on this pure white coat only when nature
drapes herself in a mantie of snow or in the
long Arctic winter, The ptarmigan, in particular, is a bird that changes coat in the summer time to a general dull-brown, mottled
color, so similar to the pervading hues of
the mosses of the Arctic summer that when
the hen is setting on her nest of moss the,
keenest-eyed hunter could almost step over
her and not note her presence one time in
ten. But the real discovery is usually madé
justas the last footatep is being taken,
when the hen grouse, with a whirr like a
buzz-saw striking a hard knot, springs into
the airand is half way to the North Pole
before the astonished discoverer can get
his gun in any sort of condition to secure
the ‘bird. As usual in such cases, the
sportsman now prepares himself to be in
better shape for the next one, and sees
nothing during the remainder of the day.
by the slight contrast of its pure white coat
with the snow is equally effective, it can be
truly said to beoneof the best protected
birds by its mimicry of surrounding conditions that probably exists.
knew how well they, are protected by this
eolor they could almost
theeye of man, but they go scurrying over
the snow-fields in a way that makes them
visible at a fairly long distance. The usual
gait is a running one much like that-we see
among quails scurrying down a dusty road
before they take to the brush beyond. They
have to be approached quite closely in order
to force them to fly at first, but when they
have used their wings once, they are more
wary of the hunter, and this increases until
it 1s impossible to get within even fair gunshot of them. Like.all the grouse family
their stupidity depends on the amount they
are hunted, and as the ptarmigan from the
inaccessibility are the least hunted of all
of the grouse, so they are likewise the most
stupid of all. By the same course of reasoning ptarmigan of the Arctic are generally
more stupid than those among the mountains with us in lower latitudes.
think, however, that I have ever seen any
in the Arctio so stupid as those about the
glaciers at the base of Mount Saint Elias in
Alaska; and yet it should be saidthat the
Arctic is densely populated compared with
districts I refer to, and_ the ptarmigan
which would make the old rule still hold
